Quiet Retreat On Ursuline Street

Lonely Planet claims that this 1840 era building was the "House of the Rising Sun" from the Animals song. I didn't try to confirm the rumor with the owners, but I wouldn't be surprised if it were true. The hotel name suggests a connection with the nearby convent, but todays' service is merely sober not spiritual. The Iron gated entrance is both beautiful and secure. The desk, typically managed by the owners son and daughter, is very helpful for finding good restaurants and things to do around town. The elevator is very old, but the rooms are restored to comfort with modern bathrooms and color television. We had the balcony on the shed roofed part of the hotel, which has window access to the balcony. The parking garage is over in the Marigny district, some 5 blocks away, but is very secure. We had to leave the dog in the car and borrow the key frequently to give him walks, but we sometimes let him run free inside the garage when we were there. On the opposite side of the French Quarter from the traffic and noise of Canal Street, we still had access to the best of the French Quarter. Verti Market is just around the corner for breakfasts, and just three blocks further is the famed Jackson Square and Cafe' du Mode. The Hotel is just two blocks from the river and trolley station, and from Bourbon Street as well.

Unique Quality: The proprietor owned hotel provides authentic advise on what to do, and the service isn't restricted to just daylight hours. We came and went any time we wanted, day or night. Ursuline street is very narrow, so loading and unloading our bags was a bit of a hassle, because as soon as we opened the trunk, another vehicle wanted to pass by. If one really wants a four star or higher hotel, then a place on the other side of Jackson Square near Canal street would be a more advisable place to look. If one wants a bed and breakfast, then the Garden District or along Rampart in the French Quarter would be better. But, for pure access to the French Quarter with antique epoch building, this is the place. I found the price to be very reasonable considering the service and location. Coffee and juice is served in the morning in the interior patio, but we usually didn't take advantage of this service due to the great abundance of coffee houses in the French Quarter. Besides the phone numbers and web address, the hotel can be reached by e-mail at reservations@villaconvento.com

Small hotel at edge of French Quarter

Spent four days over Easter weekend in New Orleans. There booking is done manually with a deposit required to confirm the stay. Two people paid for the same room so I was upgraded to one of the fourth floor suites. This room is large with a small siting room, large bedroom and a jacuzzi bath. Did not see the normal size room other than on pictures on the website but this would well be worth the money. The hotel is in the French quarter but on the edge so not too noisy but still close enough to stumble home from the bars and for site seeing around the French Quarter. The breakfast was nothing to rave about but filing and not tiresome even after four days. The staff was helpful. It does have that rundown look of many New Orleans places, heat and humidity is not great for interiors. The Elevator is distintive though mostly used the stair to work off all the food I ate.

Unique Quality: The Balconies on the rooms were very nice and relaxing, The jacuzzi was very modern and as stated above the elevator is definetly old school.
