Excellent Value

Because Hotel de la Monnaie is a "time-share" type hotel, I was a bit wary of wanting to stay here. I got it as a gift from a friend who owns one of the time-shares. What a surprise! The place is a gem, and for one who has stayed at over a dozen other N.O. hotels over the last 30 years, I and my friend were very impressed. We adventured around the back end of this hotel and discovered a thriving artist's community with many "secret" restaurants, bars and clubs with extraordinary talent and cuisine. Getting around was expedited by being just outside the Quarter and on Esplanade. With our car we were able to bolt out to wherever we wanted whenever we wanted. Definitely a keeper.

Unique Quality: Very recommended hotel for value, location and amenities. Located at the end of the Quarter's trolley, this hotel is ideally situated between the Quarter's attractions and the charming neighborhood arising to the East of Esplanade. It puts you in close proximity to N.O.'s true artistic soul and at distance from its gaudier tourist meanderings. At night, it is quiet and safe. With two internal courtyards, one with a serene fountain and the other with large palm trees, you feel like you have landed into a secret garden. The hotel staff is very professional and eager to accommodate your needs. With a parking garage located within the hotel that is free for its guests, it stands out from most other hotels that gouge you for parking. The rooms are well kept and maintained daily. The only odd thing was that they raised the bath tub up on an eight inch platform which made getting in and out somewhat difficult.

I have not stayed here. The name says hotel, but actually I think this is a time-share. It is right by the French Market, and I took the picture from the Riverfront Streetcar.

Unique Quality: Some of the condo units are two bedroom units with queen beds in each room and a queen sofa sleeper in living room. They also have a kitchenette.

Hotel de la Monnaie or Avenue Plaza Resort?

by trip2nola

Hello... We're taking a trip to NOLA in July/August, and trying to decide between 2 hotels. Is anyone familiar with the Hotel de la Monnaie and the Avenue Plaza, and if so, would you recommend one over the other? We'll be using a timeshare exchange, and have it narrowed down to these 2 properties. (We had considered the Quarter House, which is supposedly more highly rated, but reviews on another website occasionally mention mice or roach sightings in the rooms...!) We like the idea of being able to walk to various attractions from the Hotel de la Monnaie, but it sounds as though the Avenue Plaza may be in a more pleasant neighborhood? (We would have to rely heavily on the St. Charles Avenue streetcar if we stayed at the Avenue Plaza.) Is it safe to walk to the Hotel de la Monnaie at night from the heart of the French Quarter? A quiet location is important to us. Thanks for any advice you can offer!

I haven't stayed at either while in New Orleans, but can offer you this advice. The Hotel de la Monnaie is at the edge of the French Quarter, so you will have somewhat of a noiser visit if you stay here versus the Avenue Plaza which is in the Garden District (upscale homes). Think about how long you will stay and what you want to visit. You can always take a cab rather then the streetcar if you want to the Avenue Plaza.
