Laid Back Southern Charm
Yes, this property is on the National Register and yes, it is almost directly across the street from Drew Brees' home, but the atmosphere is so laid back and service so exceptional, that you just don't want to leave. The first thing you notice is that you aren't treated so much as a customer, but as a guest...a family member who stopped for the night. You are immediately greeted by one of my favorite amenities...choice of wine (merlot or chardonnay) or sherry with fresh out of the oven cookies or chocolates or fresh fruit...all complimentary all day. What better way to relax after a long flight than to sit out on substantial covered porch, in comfortable chairs sipping a nice glass of sherry.
Then, as you climb the stairs to your room (no elevator...old building), you will admire the original furnishings, lead crystal and stained glass windows that as so well preserved. All of this for less than the price of the Hilton and right in one of the best parts of Uptown New Orleans. Even the old historic street car stops right out front...no need to rent a car to get around. It all comes to you. Additionally, depending on the room, you can have a wonderful view of Audubon Park. Finally, although advertised as a continental breakfast, it was more substantial than expected and always quite good. The k-coffee machines on each floor near the rooms is also a nice touch in case you don't want to go downstairs to breakfast.
All in all, there are very few better places to stay in New Orleans to get away from it all. I have traveled to New Orleans many times, but this is my first experience with this property. I will return here again and again.
Unique Quality: Big wrap around porch with comfortable chairs to sit in read or sip a glass of wine (complimentary) or sherry while you watch the traffic (St. Charles Streetcar stops right out front) and the flora and fauna of the park. In other words, great views and great accommodations. However, although there are modern locks on the doors, the doors themselves are original to the property and therefore, will not stay closed unless locked. Additionally, there are well placed, yet somewhat hidden, cameras all over the property, as well as on site security for your safety and comfort.
