Avery Island

by LIifeLover

Is there a bus service available to Avery Island? Want to take the Tabasco tour but don't want to drive. TIA for any responses.

Re: Avery Island

Marty, as you have probably seen, the Avery Island website (http://www.tabasco.com/info_booth/faq/avery_directions.cfm) shows only driving directions. Avery Island is in the middle of nowhere (a very pretty nowhere, but nowhere, nonetheless), a good 140 miles (over 200 kms) on the map from New Orleans (it's farther by car). While I am not positive, I wouldn't be surprised if there were no bus service at all out to the "island" (of course, it's not actually an "island" but a high spot in the very flat landscape because it's on top of an underground salt dome - we call these "islands" in southern Louisiana and southeastern Texas).

I looked at Greyline in New Orleans...it looks like they used to have such a tour but don't any longer...sorry to be of no help...

You might email the company at WhatsCooking@TABASCO.com and ask them, or call them at 1-337-373-6133 (should be good for international calls, unlike our 800 numbers)...bon chance!

No, sorry. The closest town with bus service is New Iberia, and that's a ways from New Orleans.

Travel Tips for New Orleans

In honor of Jackson

by cmarsek

There are few cities in the United States that have as much to see on a leisurely strolls through the streets. In the battle against the British, General Andrew Jackson defeated the British at New Orleans. Today there is a large statue of Andrew Jackson on a horse that is reared up on its hind legs in the victorious position. I loved the sights and scenes on the streets on New Orleans!

French Quarter. A very spesial place. Famous for restaurants and atmosphere. A must. Preservation Hall is a small jazzclub with very good performers. The place where Louis Amstrong started. Very primitive inside, but the people that use to play there is among the best jazz players around. I can still feel the shivering inside when I hear one of the tunes on air.
Riverwalk is a good place to look out on Missisipi. Big wheels keep on rolling....oh yeah!

French- spanish- english ??

by tompt

New Orleans started of as a french city, was then given to the spanish, became french again and ended up with the english USA.
There are still signs telling this history. Streetnames are indicated in french and in spanish.

This is a picture of the old St. Louis Hotel. This used to be where the slave exchange was, and if you look in the stone at the top of the picture, you can still see part of the sign. The part of the building that had the word 'slave' on it is now gone, and in its place is an alley called 'Exchange Place.'
