Travel Tips for Saint Francisville

Located off US Highway 61,...

by BluecatCanoe

Located off US Highway 61, along the 'River Road' from Memphis, to New Orleans are several now small towns like Natchex, MS. that once were centers for wealthy cotton plantations. Saint Francisville, La. is a collection of beautiful anti-bellum homes, most open to the public. As I travel I like to stop in old towns and see the history that was there.

The mighty Mississippi River...

by bdbrewer

The mighty Mississippi River borders the town of St Francisville. How do you cross it at this remote location? Well, by ferry of course. You are deep in the backwoods of Louisiana when you are in St Francisville.

Louisiana State Penitentiary Museum

by calcaf38

The Angola penitentiary stands on the grounds of an old plantation and was notorious for brutality from the time of its foundation in 1880 (in former slave quarters) until the 1970s. Today, a small museum stands next to the penitentiary's entrance. Angola itself is a short drive away from St Francisville, in an isolated part of the State.

Clark Creek Natural Area

by calcaf38

This forest is actually in Mississippi, not in Louisiana, but it is not far from St Francisville.

This large natural reserve with seasonal waterfalls is a great hiking resource if you like steep terrain. Some trails are well maintained, others more primitive (and the difference is well marked on the maps). From Highway 61, take a left on Miss. Highway24. Drive for about 13 miles until you reach the Pond Store junction. Turn right and proceed past the store to the trail head parking area on the left. Have plenty of drinking water and a snack with you.

A nice getaway

by Looneydame

"Weekend Retreat"

St. Francisville is less than an hour's drive from Baton Rouge (my hometown). I enjoy spending a few nights at a bed and breakfast, hiking at the Clarks's Creek Natural area, and browsing the antique stores. It is hilly for south Louisiana and there are many lovely plantation homes to visit. It's a great location to unwind.
