Rosedown's Plantation owner...
by bdbrewer
Rosedown's Plantation owner had a daughter that died for lack of medical treatment. He had many other daughters. To insure he would always have medical attention for them, he bought his own doctor and installed on the plantation. This was his office. He also treated slaves, and neighbors. But the owner assured that he would NEVER be without medical treatment for his daughters again...
On the grounds of 'The Myrtle...
by bdbrewer
On the grounds of 'The Myrtle Plantation'. This property was ranked 13th by Smithsonian for the most haunted in the U.S. A lot of people saw and heard things while we were there. We saw and heard nothing. Of course that is because we are so pure of heart :-)))
But, what would be a fitting...
by bdbrewer
But, what would be a fitting closing for such a wonderful and exciting place with all of the plantation homes, ghosts, and loads of history? Well, if you were me, you would find a deserted little island surrounded by algae covered water and alligators and frogs and other exotic creatures. You would fix you a nice drink (of your favorite beverage of course), pull up a chair by an angel, and just chill out and contemplate the entire adventure. Speaking of angels. They are everywhere on 'The Myrtles'. In every room, all over the property, everywhere. Why? The owners believed the angels would protect them from ghosts and evil spirits. Here's to evil spirits everywhere :-))
Mary Ann Brown Nature Preserve
by Virtuous_Tourist
This site was donated to the Nature Conservancy by Mrs. L. Heidel Brown and the late Mr. Brown in memory of their daughter.
A series of trails have been constructed for the public with special stops to view numerous habitats. The preserve also features a pavilion and pond house available for day outings as well as overnight primitive camping for scout and school groups.
The trails are open to the public during daylight hours.
Mary Ann Brown Preserve supports a mature stand of beech-magnolia forest. Several streams and small ravines dissect the property.
The 109 acre preserve is located 30 miles North of Baton Rouge off of Highway 61. Turn east on Highway 965 and travel 5.5 miles, about 2 miles past the Audubon House entrance. The preserve will be on the left. The physical address is 13583 Highway 965.
A Good Spot to Slow Down
by calcaf38
I went through Louisiana too fast, partly because I had planned to stop around Baton Rouge for one night, on my way North to Mississippi. I have lived in the US for thirty years, and I still can't get it into my thick skull that one shouldn't expect to stumble onto a lovely auberge next to a good and inexpensive restaurant in this country. You must plan in advance - and in any case your choice is between sad motels and prissy bed and breakfasts. As it was, Baton Rouge after dark wasn't too inviting, so I found myself on a deserted highway going North, starved and exhausted. I decided to make it to St. Francisville and to stay there for two nights. I am glad I did, as there were several places of interest in the area.
