Travel Tips for Shreveport

Red River Cruise

by vigi

We took a ride on the Red River with the "Spirit of the Red" River Cruise. The boat is docked on the River directly across from Sci-Port. After seeing the beautiful Dorcheat Bayou last evening, this one-hour tour didn't interest me. And there are rubbish (plastic water bottle, cups, plastic bags, etc.) floating on the river... not nice view. But pretty relaxing though.

Historic Oakland Cemetery

by grandmaR

under construction

On the very edge of Shreveport's business district is the old Oakland Cemetery, resting place of Shreveport's pioneers for over 150 years. It is not that well known (which is why I have listed it as off the beaten track) but it is the city's oldest and arguably most important landmark.

Facts About Oakland

* Founded in 1847
* Oldest monument bears a death date of 1842; moved here from earlier, now vanished, Fannin Street Cemetery, which closed when Oakland was opened.
* At least 15 (and probably 16) Mayors rest here
* 85% of burials pre-date 1900
* Ten acres in size
* Boundaries are Milam, Christian and Sprague Streets and the Municipal Plaza
* Believed to contain about 5,000 burials, many of these unmarked
* 759 victims of the 1873 yellow fever epidemic rest in a mass grave; more throughout cemetery
* Jewish section (1858) was third Jewish Cemetery in Louisiana outside New Orleans
* Over 300 veterans of the Civil War are buried here
* Oakland is still in use, though few burials now take place here
* Listed in National Register of Historic Places, 1977

The entrance to Oakland Cemetery is located near downtown Shreveport at the intersection of Milam Street and Elvis Presley Boulevard, by the Municipal Auditorium.

Moooove over for Ice Cream!

by ATXtraveler about Maggie Moo's

When I decided to ask my fiance to marry me, I did not realize quite how often it would have meant we had to go to the ice cream stores... so if you need any tips on where to find this cool treat, please email me!

In Shreveport, I would recommend going to Maggie Moo's... where you can have ice cream your way... by picking a base ice cream and then adding mix-ins like strawberries, heath bar, peanuts, etc to make your cup extra special!

The Louisiana State Exhibit Museum

by jholley534

Renowned for its large murals, frescoes and amazing dioramas depicting the history and culture of Louisiana, the museum features exhibits of prehistoric Indian artifacts, Louisiana industry and agriculture. To the average out of town tourist, however, it might not be that interesting to you. Go and see for yourself.

Caspiana House

by keeweechic

Caspiana House was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1981. These buildings serve as a history laboratory for not only students and teachers but also community groups and tourists.
