Shreveport Area

Looking for things to do in the Shreveport area that involve nature, i.e. hiking or canoeing. Don't mind driving an hour or so away. Also any ideas for evenings besides gambling? Will be in on 29 Jun to 1 Jul.

There are some nice things to do in Shreveport BESIDES gamble. Ive heard good things about the Gardens of the American Rose Center. Caddo lake is north of town and very nice, R. W. Norton Art Gallery is always pretty (see my VT page), the Meadows Museum of Art on the lovely Centenary College campus, as well, Lincoln Parish park has a great mountain biking trail (located an hour east on I-20).

8th Air Force Museum

Immediately after arrival in Shreveport, I was picked up to join the group in the Eighth Air Force Museum. With more than 12,000 square feet of display space inside and nine acres of land outside, the museum features authentic uniforms, dioramas and aircraft dating back to the first world war. 17 aircraft on display, including the P-51 Mustang, the B-17 Flying Fortress, the F-84F Thunderstreak, the B-47 Stratojet, the KC-97 Stratofreighter, the B-52D Stratofortress and the B-29 Superfortress.

There could be some truth to this story because in 1811 New Madrid, Missouri had an earthquake that measured 8.9 and this could have knocked down enough trees to form the great raft that dammed the Red River and formed Caddo Lake.

Caddo Parish Courthouse

Caddo Parish Courthouse was built in 1926-38, this is the third Courthouse to occupy this site since 1860. The first Courthouse on the site served as Louisiana's Confederate Statehouse during Civil War. A Confederate Memorial on Texas Street side was erected 1905.

The State Fair of Louisiana

The State Fair comes for about two weeks at the end of October. There's rides, a zoo, livestock, and lots of food. Several competions are also held during the fair such as Livestock, PCRA Rodeo, Fine Arts, Cooking and BMX Bike Races.
