Nottoway Plantation is an amazing piece of history and architecture. I highly recommend the tour, complete with guide, for details and history you will find fascinating. I went with with the love of my life, and we had a great time, exploring the house and the grounds surrounding this wonderful old home. The view was inspiring, the history was fascinating and one could only marvel at the craftsmenship of this home. It is located between Baton Rouge and New Orleans on Hwy 1 near White Castle. The view of the Mississippi River was very enjoyable, imagining what it must have been like in the 1800's.

We spent the night here last year prior to going to a New Orleans Saints football game.
This is called Nottoway Plantation. It was spared from destruction by a Yankee soldier who had been a guest in the home prior to the Civil War. He directed Union soldiers to quit firing on it from the River. Not before a cannon ball became lodged in one of the front pillars, however.

Nottoway is the largest surviving plantation home in the South. It was built in 1857 by John Hampden Randolph, who amassed a great fortune in sugar. The house has 50 rooms, which were certainly needed, as John Randolph had 11 children. It is said that Nottoway was the first Plantation Home to have a bathroom on the second floor. The White Ballroom is the most beautiful room in the house. It was the center of all of the Randolph's entertainment activities, with parties, receptions and balls.
The story behind Nottoway Plantation
by Helga67
During the Civil War the whole area around the Mississippi river was occupied by Union troops. The mansion owes its survival to Mrs. Randolph, the wife of John Randolph who built the mansion. During the war, a Union gun boat on the Mississippi fired at the house. When Mrs. Randolph appeared on the front gallery, the young captain recognized both her and the house. He had been a guest there before the war. He came ashore and offered her his protection.
