SK's House
by Tyranny
Any tips on finding the Mansion? My fiance and I will be traveling to Bangor on our honeymoon in September. Mainly to camp at Acadia, but, we've planned to visit several cities and towns that we've always wanted to see, one of which is Bangor (specificly to see Stephen King's Mansion). I know it's in the historic district, but could you give me a tip or two on fining it?

He doesn't hide. Just ask at a coffe shop or gas station.

There are bat motifs on the iron fence surrounding his home. An old Bangor friend took me there last year. I wish I could tell you the address but I didn't write it down and I wouldn't be able to find it myself. It looks like a normal large home though.

The address is, I beleive, either 114 or 144 West Broadway.

The nearest cross street is Union, which is a major street. Union runs in front of the airport.
The house is painted maroon, look for the bats on the black iron gate.
Travel Tips for Bangor
The Short List
by Gilfeather
Dress for comfort...loose, casual and practical.
-Jacket ,sweater, fleecewear..active-wear
-Sneakers, Hiking Boots, sandels if going to the beach.
-Shorts
-Cotten tee shirts
-It's ok to leave your cheese hats and big foam fingers at home. -Bug repellant
(Avon "Skin-So-Soft "seems to work pretty well.)
Or pick up some "Bens", which doesnt smell quite as pleasant but is effective too.
-sunscreen
-Buy yourself one of those 7 Day pill holders. 100 or 200 speed Fujii or Velvia
City Forest Trails
by Gilfeather
This 650-acre wildlife habitat and working forest is owned by the city and open for limited public use.(No snowmobiles, hunting, Monstertruck rallys or cock-fighting.)
However, there are about 9 miles of trails available to hiking, biking, snowshoeing and skiing with approximately 4 miles of access roads.
Insider Tips:
1. The East Trail makes a 4 mile loop around the whole trail system and is a good introduction.
2. The parking lot tends to fill on the weekends but once you start ambling along the trails you only seem to run into other people occasionally...which is nice if you happen to be having a coronary.
3. Many folks bring their dogs... and the considerate ones pick up after them. *hint*
"Heck, you may even spot a beaver."
("Or... was that just a fur-coated "Out-ah-State-ah.")
"Hmmmmmm."
Directions:
Head out Stillwater Avenue...past mall ..towards Orono...couple miles on left. Watch for blue "City Forest" sign on right.
I guess that 's right...
Understand this- I am typically only capable of giving directions in relation to Paul Bunyans statue. (This gets complicated when I am in Boston.)
Gateway to Acadia, northern Maine & the Maritimes
by pchamlis
"I'm sure there's more than we saw or needed..."
Bangor seems like a pretty nice town. Like my home city of Tallahassee, FL, it is a college town. The University of Maine is located just a mile or two up the road, officially in Orono. And, from what I saw in my limited time in Bangor, there is a fair amount of history and architecture worth looking over.
But... for us, Bangor was our gateway, our way in and out of the Canadian Maritime provinces. The small and efficient airport at Bangor is the best place to find regular service from the rest of the US to northern Maine. We flew in via Delta Airlines, and I noted that several other majors served Bangor, albeit with very small planes.
In addition to the Canadian Maritime provinces, it's a short little ride from Bangor over to Bar Harbor and the Acadia National Park area, which some consider America's most beautiful national park.
So, I first apologize to Bangor for not REALLY getting to know her. The city served us in a welcoming and comfortable way on our recent visit, and I'd heartily recommend utilizing Bangor's transit facilities in your travelings northward.
Home of the giant Paul Bunyan
by kazander
We didn't plan on visitIng the city of Bangor, but when a wayward bus driver hit my car in Bar Harbor, this is where we came to get her fixed up. We only stayed in town for one night, and although circumstances were not the happiest, we made the most of it. After finding ourselves here, I broke out the trusty Maine guidebook, discovered that there was a huge statue of Paul Bunyan and a Brewery right on the river. That Brewery was Sea Dog, home to one of my (now) favorite beers!
Every cloud has a silver lining.......and how can you go wrong with a Giant Paul Bunyan?
