More about Bar Harbor Regency
Awesome!
by emilienoelle about Stewman's Lobster Pound
Stewman's has two locations in Bar Harbor, one downtown on Frenchman Bay and another on Eden Street in the Bar Harbor Regency Hotel. It's definitely one my favorite places to eat in Bar Harbor. The seafood is all really fresh and reasonably priced. If you go to the downtown location you can sit on the top deck of the restaurant overlooking the Bay where they have picnic tables. It's really beautiful and very casual and relaxing. They have a kids menu here as well which is great because most kids (at least not mine) don't want to eat seafood. You can also go right to the pound at the downtown location and purchase lobsters to take home and cook yourself. Steamers, lobsters and clam chowder were all very good.
Over Priced / Unimpressive Rooms

We stayed at the Bar Harbor Regency (aka Sunspree Resort) and we were not impressed. We stayed there for three nights. Our first full day there, our room was never cleaned. The second day, it was not cleaned until after 4:30 pm. We had never stayed at a hotel (especially in this price range) where our room had not been cleaned until so late in the day. This may not be an issue for most, but we have a 6-month old who needed to nap. The room was not impressive. A chunk of the ceiling literally fell inches from where our baby was sleeping, and the staff could not have cared less. The pool and location are nice, but the facility is lacking, to say the least.
Disappointing

Not worth the price...
This hotel was definitely not worth the cost. I booked this on line and went by the photos of the room on their website. I emailed management and asked if the rooms actually looked like the photo and was told yes. The description of the room was "spectacular ocean views". Upon arrival, we found our room to be small, and did not have this view described. We did have a view of the harbor but also of the side of the adjacent wing as well! The room had an odor to it, (we discovered it was partially due to the shower curtain smelling sour) and the rug was very dirty and smelled musty. I contacted the front desk about this and they promptly changed the curtain and deodorized our room. (After it still had the musty odor). The walls were scuffed and the bottom of the refrigerator in the bathroom was dirty. (Apparently from mopping) The ceiling was cracked with part of it peeling off.
Housekeeping was lax, as they did not leave us refills for coffee. Coffee cups were not exchanged, only rinsed. I could tell as my cup had a chip and crack in it, and had the same one 2 days in a row! No pens nor pads to take phone messages with either.
Most of the outside lights were out so it made it very difficult to walk around the grounds at night.
On the plus side, the front staff person was very courteous and when I expressed my concern that I felt the room did not meet our expectations for the price, he could only say he was sorry. No offer to change rooms though.
There are too many choices of very nice hotels for less money in the area. We were disappointed for the cost. For the price, one would expect much better. Wouldn't stay here again.
Avoid. Seriously. Woeful.

On two days of a four-evening stay, we returned from our day in the park to our room left unlocked by housekeeping. Twice, in spite of the first-time alert. Moreover, the key-actived outside doors were propped open! Some engagement trip.
It was our second room. We were moved from the first for unrepaired water damage in the ceiling and carpet. That, plus an unfinished maintenance issue in the closet. The heated pool ... wasn't. Our building was sans elevator and not ADA accessible. Need I go on?
Excruciatingly overpriced. It was an absolutely woeful experience, and a discredit to the brand. For me, there is no compromise on security, and on-site management was unresponsive.
Our 7th visit here!

We've stayed here each year for the last 7 years, sometimes in May, sometimes in the fall. Make sure to get an ocean view room, the views are spectacular from the balcony! I have had grouses with the front desk (booked an ocean view room and not got one etc.) on a couple of occasions, but as long as you pick the right time to talk to the front desk staff (NOT just as a coach party are arriving!) the staff are helpful. I live in the U.K. and wouldn't dream of visiting the U.S. without spending a few days in Bar Harbor.
Not a good choice

The room at this "resort" that we reserved in advance was unacceptable - rugs and fixtures in poor repair, etc. It was very overpriced for the room quality. Prior to check-in, we voiced our objections and requested that our reservation be cancelled. Citing their 24-hour notice rule, the hotel refused to cancel our first night. They offered an "upgrade" as an accomodation. We were given a similar room in another wing. It supposedly had an ocean view, but water was barely evident and we mostly saw construction occurring on the grounds. Our patio was useless and the condition of that wing of the hotel was poor - rugs covering holes in the floor, outside doors not working, garbage bags in the hall, etc. We left after one night. We subsequently attempted to seek an adjustment, and while Holiday Inn corporate management was understanding, they were unable to gain the cooperation of the Sunspree Resort management who refused our request. Visitors to Bar Harbor can do much better than this property in terms of value, condition, and service.
Great bayside location, beautiful resort-like setting

Stayed here in July 2006. A bit pricey, but Bar Harbor is not cheap and the hotel's location and beautiful grounds made it worthwhile. Had no problems to report. Breakfasts are expensive, but a quick 5-minute trip into town each morning solved that problem.
Nice on the outside!

We booked two nights Aug 5th & 6th @ $234 + tax per night for a partial water view room. When we arrived we loved the grounds, close to the water (harbor), nice pool, beautiful flowers, ... We had room on third floor (804) in a detached bldg. This bldg does not have an elevator! Room had a nice view of pool and the ocean from the small balcony. The room and building is dated in our opinion. It is a short drive (too far to walk with a 2 yr old) to downtown harbor area. We ate dinner outside at Stewmans Lobster pound (at hotel) and loved the fantastics views and the sounds of the ocean. Kids loved the heated outdoor pool. We decided to leave after first night. We was charged a $100 early departure fee!
