The Hills' Shin Pond Village: Just a few miles from the Northern Entrance...

Cottages and campground area.
As I recall...The Loon is the cottage with the best view. But you may have to go yourself to scope it out.
I think they do snowmobile rentals here too.

Nice vista of Shin Pond.
Last I knew they had Giffords ice cream too...

Matagamon Wilderness Campground Camps

Tenting on the East Branch is such fun!

Last and best camping before entering North Entrance to Baxter. Check-In at the store.

Joe & Sue Christianson are the new owners.

Insider Tip: When you are done buying a "Dove Bar" at the store..Take the first road on your right...after the bridge...Drive a mile or so to the end and on your right is the dam. Get out and enjoy the view and the remains of your ice-cream. If you are fortunate you might see the former owners of the campground..the Dudley family. Say hi for me.

Camping Reservations

Baxter's forever wild theme means no hotels, no restaurants, no convenience stores, nothing. People come to Baxter to get back to nature and that means camping.

If you want to camp (as opposed to visit for the day), then you have to make reservations and you should make them at the beginning of the year. They begin taking reservations for the summer on January 1. We reserved our September spots on January 2 - and still didn't get exactly what we hoped for!

Roaring Brook Campground: "Base Camp"

After a long day of driving, we didn't expect to have time for much hiking so we made reservations to stay at Roaring Brook. We had a great lean-to with a view facing the brook.

This campground is convenient to numerous hiking trails including our pick, the trail leading up to Chimney Pond and Mt Katahdin.

Keep in mind that this is rustic camping. There is no electricity, running water, or other amenities. The outhouses are the real thing!

Chimney Pond Campground: "High Camp"

We had wanted a lean-to at Chimeny Pond, but had to settle for the bunk house, depite reserving on January 2. It turned out well though because there were so few other campers when we were there.

The Chimeny Pond area is spectacular. The views are beyond belief and the wilderness is all around you.

Again, this is rustic camping and this time you even have to hike in to your site.

Katahdin Shadows Campground: Medways Cleanest Campground

The campgrouind facilities (shower and camp store) were clean. The cabin we stayed in had a cute little kitchen with small fridge cooktop and sink. Had a small sleeping loft which our sons loved!!! The cabin was clean cozy and small the price was very reasonable. The pool and playground were pretty shabby. The campground has lots of domesticated rabbit running around which was cute but a few looked old and had some scars.
