Boothbay as a home base?

by EPTraveler

We are planning a trip to Boothbay Harbor early this fall, mid-Sept and will be in the area for 4 nights. Could anyone suggest some coastal destination(s) for an alternative night or two stay that are scenic and interesting outside of Boothbay? We will have a car. If possible, we would like to avoid the more touristy areas (Bar Harbor, from the sound of it) and concentrate on the famed rugged coast or anything else scenic that is recommended. On the flip side, if there is a strong argument to spend our entire time in Boothbay, I'd like to know that also. It is our first visit to the area and we are really looking forward to it.

Thank you VTr's in advance.

Joel

Dear Ex-Mainer,

Thanks so much for all of the valuable information. I have a feeling we will take you up on as many of your recommedations as time allows.

Since posting my original question, we are now more inclined to stay one night here, one night there, as we work our way along the coast. The pressing issue: What makes the most sense, flying into Portland or flying into Bangor, and heading straight for the coast. Because we are attempting to use up some frequent flier points, I'm hoping to get this part nailed down as quickly as possible.

Regards,

Joel

You don't have to worry about touristy areas in Mid September. Perfect time to visit Maine. Weather should be great and even Bar Harbor and Ogunquit will not be very crowded except on Saturday night.

Travel Tips for Boothbay Harbor

Park your car at the shopping...

by tweldon

Park your car at the shopping center lot and walk (it isn't very far or very challenging) or take the trolley down to the center of town. Then just start sightseeing. Every shop has wonderful treasures and the people are so interesting. Many shopowners are 'from away' and have an interesting tale about their life's path that brought them to where they are today. Go to the glass blower, he makes great Christmas presents. Eat breakfast at the Ebb Tide - great bargain. Go to the Lobsterman's Co-Op for dinner - great lobster, good prices. Take a sunset cruise on the Pink Lady and when you get off of the boat, get ice cream and window shop at Cornucopia where you will surely find something, maybe even for yourself. Check the events calendar for activities at the library. My favorite week in Boothbay Harbor is Windjammer Week, usually the last week in June. There is something different to do each day and the evenings usually include fire works. Find a good place to see the ships coming into the harbor and take snacks. It takes a while but it is just amazing.
