More about Ledges By The Bay
A coastal treasure!
I read about this property on Trip Advisor, and decided to give it a try. What a wonderful, peaceful place! The rooms were large and nicely appointed, and clean, clean, clean!!! Hotel staff was very friendly and made us feel at home. Plenty of hot water in the bathroom. Beautifully kept property, with everything in good working order. But that view -- at any time of day, it is just gorgeous! I would stay at the Ledges by the Bay again.
A real pleasant surprise!
When we arrived at Ledges By The Bay I was a little concerned. It was at first difficult to discern if it was kept up well. We got the key and entered a very tasteful, well-kept, clean room. Everything was in immaculate conditon except for an easy chair next to the bed, which had the fabric on the back of the chair worn out and ripped in several places, and one corner of the padding protruding out. This was kind of surprising given the excellent conditon of the rest of the room. We had a balcony that had a gorgeous view of the bay. Below the motel units was a large well manicured lawn. On the lawn was a canopy with cushioned easy chairs and Adarondack chairs under it. You could sit there and relax, read a book if you wanted, and glance out on the beautiful bay. If you wanted some sun you could simply move one of the chairs out from under the canopy. There was a staircase down to the water, but it was not a beach, just rocks. In the morning there was a coffee room that had orange juice, coffee, and some store-bought doughnuts and pastries. Hanging from the overhangs outside the rooms about every 10-15 feet were hanging baskets of flowers - a nice touch. All in all, we enjoyed our stay and would have no trouble staying there again.
Ledges by the Bay was EXCELLENT
We stayed at Ledges by the Bay for 2 nights. It was a beautiful location in Rockport (Glen cove), ME. 5 miles south of Camden right on Penobscot Bay. Rooms 1-34 have full oceanview. Rooms 1-9 are older, smaller rooms with one bed.Rooms 10-34 are the newest rooms. We stayed in Room 11. Rooms 10 & 11 were handicapped rooms although we didn't need one. Our family members met us there for the second night. Rooms 10-34 had either king beds or 2 queen beds. The rooms are very large. There are 2 bathroom sinks-one in the bathroom and one outside. Very convenient. The rooms I saw in the newer building have new, good size fridges. Our room had a comfortable king bed. Our family members had a room with the 2 queens and their fridge was even larger with a separate freezer! The pool is really nice and good size. They give you pool towels and there are lounges, chairs, tables and shelters in the pool area. Everything is clean, clean, clean. There is a rocky path to the ocean-no beach. It is pass at your own risk. They have a huge grassy area with chairs and shade overlooking the ocean. There was a croquet game set up for guests. The area was large enough to also play frisbee or anything else. I saw a gas grill which looked like it was for guest use because it was near the grassy area, but i didn't ask about it. They have another older building behind the other 2 that looked like it had efficiency units (rooms 35-40) but there was no oceanview from this building. In this building on ground level, there was a coffee room open from 7am-11:30am during the summer season. They had continental breakfast with coffee, tea, hot chocolate, apple and orange juices, donuts, pastries, english muffins and bagels, cereal. The coffee room was well-stocked with butter, jams, peanut butter, cream cheese. There were tables as well as a TV and radio. This is a family-owned property and everyone is very friendly and helpful. The property is also pet-friendly. The only minor comment I have, which had ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with Ledges on the Bay, and there was nothing they could do about it ,was that a short way up on Rt. 1, is a new condo complex going in and you could hear(but not see) construction equipment clearing the property. The noise spoiled the serenity of the Ledges as you looked out from your balcony to the ocean. Ledges won't be spoiled because the construction is far enough up on Rt. 1, it will just be nicer when it's done.
Room-$169, Fun Postcards-$5, View & Value-Priceless!
My Mother and I attended a family gathering in the Glen Cove area. Rather than having to do a late night drive back to Bath, we booked a stay with the Ledges.
What an unexpedted treat!
The view is breathtaking...and the gorgeous, expansive lawn between the motel and the water is set up for croquet and badminton. A great place for children to romp, and parents to unwind! There are comfy chairs down by the water with a canopy for protection from the sun...There are flowers everywhere...beautiful gardens, and containers, and the hanging plants are stunning. There was even a whimsical 5 Ft. lobster with a cut-out in the "face" for souvenir photos, with of course, that stunning view of the bay for the background.
The coffee room was another highlight! Lots of huge maps and information about the area...Nice large pictures and panoramic photos done by local photographers...The complimentary continental breakfast was filled with many choices...not only coffee, juices and milk, but an array of pastries, and breads with many choices for toppings; teas, both herbal and regular; decaf coffee for my mother: we left without hunger or thirst...Thank You!
The pool.........very clean, and the water was silky warm...lots of chairs for lounging in the sun....and the surrounding flowers added more eye candy, (as if it were needed) for the view of the bay...
I had a bit of a problem hooking up to the internet. One call to the office and I was quickly on my way down the internet highway!
The staff, was friendly and efficent...(they kept our very comfortable room ship shape) The owner's are absolutely the perfect host's...They are Maine at it's finest!
A very family-friendly lodging, with extremely reasonable rates for all of the delightful accommodations!
Thank you for a most marvelous stay at your motel...We will be back again later in the summer!
This is not an upscale place but very attractive for price and ocean view. It was clean and very functional. A bonus was the lady taking care of the outside summer plants. She was a delight to speak with and had some good tips for enjoying Maine.
The absolute cleanest room I've stayed in
Sept. 23-26, 2007.. The Ledges is a jewel in the rough. It is a small roadside motel located near Rockland and Camden, ME. Our room was oceanfront with beautiful views of Penobscot Bay! The owners were very nice and this was a very reasonably priced hotel for the location. This was by far one of the cleanest hotels that I have ever stayed in... We would definitely return for another visit to this location!!!
We had extended family get-together in Rockport and we reserved four rooms at the Ledges By the Bay. On behalf of the whole family (fourteen of us), we say thank you for a great stay! The rooms were warm and bright, and there was enough space for all of us to gather in one for a drink and to plan our evening activities. The views of the bay were gorgeous, the showers just right, the morning coffee, pastries and breads a wonderful addition; and as mentioned previously by other reviewers...the rooms were unbelievably clean. The staff was attentive and responsive to requests. It was a great stay, and an outstanding price for the area.
Cheap Price, Cheap Attitude
Our vacation started out perfectly fine. We spoke to a woman who said she is the front desk manager of the motel, and informed her of our arrival in Maine. We let her know that we would be getting to the motel shortly, and reconfirmed that our accommodations as we requested were in order. That all went smoothly and there was no problem at check-in either.
The lobby was quite cluttered and very out of date. The decor was assorted mismatched furniture and worn out area rugs. The "front desk" was a nub of a counter and was barely large enough to serve its purpose. At least the room was half-way decent for the price and location. When we entered our motel room, it was a half-way decent size and equipped for convenience. There was a mini fridge, micro (which we actually got the next day), table and chairs, and separate wall units for the heat and air conditioner. The bathroom was narrow, yet accommodating. There is a sliding glass door leading to a balcony with chairs so you can sit outside when the weather is nice. So much for the room, now for the bad part.
We stayed at this property for a while and got to explore the area and surrounding cities a bit. There weren't many touristic events going on around town but there were some good restaurants and it was still nice to experience the natural beauty and tranquility of the surroundings. Unforturnately, this did not last for long. As we got familiar with the front desk manager, her outrageous character revealed itself. It was toward the end of our stay when things occurred and we really had a bad taste left in our mouths. Apparently this woman has never been anywhere by her own admission. She also seems to have decided to be close-minded toward people who have perceivably more interesting lives than she does. The front desk manager was rude, unsophistocated, crass, and ignorant. I'm not sure what the travel scene is like at this motel in the summer, but there were absolutely no out-of-state travelers to my knowledge. According to her, there are many tourists from all over the country that come to this motel in the summer and visit the area. I find that extremely hard to believe considering she can be very argumentative when asked common questions that tourists would inquire about. Her response usually comes in the form of indignance and cynicism, ending with something like " what's that supposed to mean?"
We are considering revisiting Maine with some friends in the summer during lobster season, but we will definitely never stay at this motel again. The problem is not really the motel, or the accommodations, or the location (which is actually convenient). The family that owns and operates the motel are very nice and hospitable people, and they know how to relate to people of varying intelligences and experiences. The family members are hard-working people willing to be flexible to accommodate their customers to their best ability. If it had been a matter of doing business with them only, this review would reflect a much different perception. Unfortunately, the front desk manager, who resides on the property, does not appreciate that her horrible attitude is a gross misrepresentation of the motel and ultimately results in people not returning to the motel although they may frequently visit Maine, particularly the Rockport area. The front desk manager never offered an apology for her attitude or even acted as though she had any remorse for her attitude. Maybe she has been insensitive to her rudeness for so long, she's incapable of socially acceptable behavior. The front desk manager puts a damper on the title of her position and does not represent the travel and tourism/ hospitality industry very well. Oddly enough there are other employees that live on the property which seems very strange to us. We are very well traveled and have never encountered a situation where so many employees live on property. We also heard through the grapevine that this is the best option for them.
To our fellow world travelers; whether you visit Maine for business, leisure, or exploration, we would highly advise that based on what you've read of this review, that you would make your best decision whether or not to stay at this motel. It is a choice where you invest your money and time, because when all is said and done, all you take with you when you leave are the intangible memories. Although you can't control how best according to plan your trip goes, anyone who's been around can tell you something always happens. Sometimes the undesirable things that happen are out of your control, but when it comes to peoples' attitudes, an allowance of this type of "mishap" would be counterproductive.
It's a shame that in today's society, some people can't handle a minimal amount of minimal responsibility minimally given to them with minimal expectations.
What a surprise!
What a pleasant surprise the Ledges By The Bay turned out to be. My husband and I booked a room at a really low rate and figured we what would get what we paid for. We hesitated booking, but the girl on the phone assured us that we would be happy and that their web page was a true representation of their motel.
The motel office is an extension of the owners house. We find this to be typical of small family owned motels. A warm and inviting atmosphere. Having never visited the area we had many questions about where to eat and what to do in the winter. She offered suggestions, gave us maps of the local area and a list of what was playing at the movie theater, in case of snow.
Our room was very nice. We had a room with a king size bed. The room was large with a nice little table situated by a set of sliding glass doors to our own balcony. Our room was equipped with a TV, refrigerator, iron/ironing board, and a hair dryer, internet access although I did not bring my computer this trip its good to know. We didn't even have to ask for extra pillows or a blanket. They were already in our room, along with extra towels. The bathroom was large and there was an extra vanity in the room so my husband wasn't waiting for me. There was a warm and inviting feel to the room all colors!! No white linens!!! We felt sure the view would be only from a great distance. We were wrong. We stood on the balcony our first night watching the water, the view was breathtaking, a bit cold but worth it.
we will come back in the warmer months to see the trees with leaves…..
