Travel Tips for Kennebunkport

I wish I could see the Bush...

by Easty

I wish I could see the Bush compound when I was there. But it was just too foggy. I just hung around the center of town. It had a bunch of nice little shops. Both my mother and I stopped into a shop that made its own chocolate. The chocolate was out of this world. We made the best out of a foggy day.

Fresh from the Atlantic, local specialties

by pchamlis

I love to eat, and I also love seafood. THE local specialties, which are good everywhere, include lobster, clams, haddock and mussels.

I also love shrimp, but they don't actually catch a lot of shrimp in the K'bunkport area, so you might want to have shrimp when you're closer to the Gulf of Mexico, where THEY'RE the best.

In Maine, do as the Maine-folk do....have yourself a lobster. All of the seafood was outstanding. But, THE best thing from the sea that I had while in the area had to be "Windows on the Water"'s Thai-style lobster. Wow.

Famous Trolley Museum, but Worth Visit?

by glabah

It has been quite a long time since I visited Kennebunkport or its trolley museum. Therefore, what I have to say should be taken into consideration only after visiting what others have to say.

Pchamlis says that the trolley museum is "Way off the Track" at $7.50 per person in his Tourist Trap Tips. That may very well be the case.

However, the claim that this museum is a "scrap yard" is a bit out of line, and so is the claim that you can see everything the museum has from the parking lot. Take a look at their web site. There are well over 100 cars that have been preserved here. In order to see them, however, you need to actually go into the museum complex, and take a look around.

In wooden cars, there really isn't that much worth scrapping. However, maintaining and restoring the car collection requires a fairly extensive group of volunteers, and in fact when I last visited the museum there were approximately seven (7) full time paid restoration workers - professional wood workers of a skill that could not be found among the volunteer labor. That was some time ago, and from the sound of the web site, it appears that those are no longer working at the museum.

What some describe as a short trolley ride around a circle of track also includes a trip down a section of track that is on the old roadbed of the railroad that used to serve the area.

Good local seafood and hand-crafted beers

by pchamlis about Federal Jack's Pub and Grill, lower Kennebunk

A good place for a basic and tasty meal. It CAN get very crowded at night, so you might want to plan on spending a little extra time sipping a beer while waiting for a table if you dine after about 6:00 pm. Reportedly, this is one of former President Bush's favorite places to eat in town, and he often can be found enjoying a lobster roll and a beer. Apparently, he still skips the broccoli. : )

Federal Jacks also has a nice very of Kennebunkport's snug harbor. All of the food is, or appears to be, very good.

I especially enjoyed the hand-crafted local brews on tap. The Sebago dark was very good. It had a taste similar to Guinness, but it wasn't as thick.

Tour the houses along Ocean...

by Easty

Tour the houses along Ocean Ave.
Of what I saw of the houses in Kennebunkport, they were huge and spectacular. The Bush Compound is located on this street. If only the fog would go away for just a few minutes so I could just see this beautiful place (I have seen pictures of it). No such luck. It is definitely worth seeing.
