How about a buggy ride around Kennebunkport
by Goner
Kennebunkport is filled with tourists, but it doesn't take away from it's ambience of a layed back town, you immediately relax and wander from store-to-store with all the others. If you need a respite from shopping, hop on the buggy for a ride around the town.
Don't overlook the local seafood shacks
by pchamlis
There are plenty of highly rated restaurants in the Kennebunks, and you'll not have anything less than a terrific meal at any of them. In some cases, you'll pay dearly for your luxury.
However, one area that's truly amazing in the cuilinary world of Kennebunkport would be the simple "clam shacks". These places sell fresh and lightly fried seafood, fresh from the cold waters of the north Atlantic.
In addition to the expected clams, one will find lobster rolls, and a very tasty version of fish and chips featured north Atlantic haddock. In almost every case, your meal was in the drink only hours earlier, and therein lies the magic. On numerous occasions, we stepped up to a local "shack" to have a lobster roll, some chowder or.....one of my favorites.....some fried clams.
Always fresh and ready to go, every single time was wonderful.
Mosquitos as big as birds
by kidkilowatt
If you are travelling to Kennebunkport in the summer, you should make sure to bring with you an ample supply of bug spray. The mosquitos will attack and will take no hostages. You would think with their abnormally large size, they'd be easier to spot and smack, but they somehow remain stealth, so your best chance lies in the bug spray. Douse yourself.
Meet the President on the golf course
by pchamlis
In Kennebunkport, we stayed at the 1802 Inn on Locke Street. This inn butts right up against the 17th fairway of the Cape Arundel Gold Club.
I am told that whenver "W" is in Kennebunkport, he and his dad (aka George Bush I or simply "41") play golf at Cape Arundel. In an effort to play quietly and minimize local furor, they always play very early in the morning. So, if you'd like to meet the President and his dad, get up early and sit out at the sitting area at the 1802 Inn. I've been told that it is not uncommon for people sitting on the 17th fairway at the 1802 to get into a nice conversation with both men.
Now, you can get near the Cape Arundel Golf course from places other than the 1802 Inn, but you might be walking around or near someone's backyard. And besides, if you're reading my tips seriously, you already know that I insist that the 1802 Inn is THE best place to stay in Kennebunkport.
Say hello to the President and his dad for me.
Check out the lovely homes on Ocean Drive
by pchamlis
Departing Kennebunkport from Dock Square, Ocean Drive winds its way slowly northward along the craggy Maine coast. Along the way and just outside Kennebunkport, you'll find numerous homes and estates exhibiting the coastal charm and character that we all associate with coastal Maine.
Although certainly valuable and large, these homes do not seem pretentious or ostentatious. Rather, they exhibit the grandeur and class of a sea coast gentry lifestyle of days past.
