I'll be in Portland, ME for the first week in September (staying in Harpswell). Any suggestions on what not to miss or do, etc. while there? Will have a car for day trips
Thanks.
Hi
We visit Maine often . We enjoy Old Portland, next to the downtown area along Commercial St. next to Casco Bay. The Old Port is filled with little shops, restaurants, and cafes. Its a cozy area. Great lobster..www.visitportland.com/ offers some ideas.
Try the old port area. Lots of good shopping and restaurants. www.mainecoastlife.com is a good resource. Don't miss the Portland Head light in Cape Elizabeth.
The Casco Bay Steamship Company runs through October with several daily cruises. Check their web site !! Casco Bay is huge. If you are lucky you will see a Windjammer Race, multi-masted vessels and, of course, some seals.
Happy Travels.
From Harpswell go north to Bath, ME. there you will find the "Maine Merritime Musuem" and lots of shops. Go a little farther north and spend a day in "Booth Bay Harbor" take a Whale watching or fishing trip and moore shops or the play house. "Reds" take out is on the way named worlds best Lobster roll. There are also a lot of State parks and beachees. In Portland catch a "Sea Dog" Ball game and try a "Sea Biscuit" they are grate Icecream sandwich. In "Brunswick" go and eat at "Fat Boys" Its a real Drive in resteraunt also just over the bridge in Topsham is the "Sea Dog Brewing Company" Good food and drink. Agusta is the state capital and there is a Grate musuem there at the state house. most of all enjoy

While visiting Portland you should eat at The Great Lost Bear at least once (do not go if you're pressed for time because service is SLOW, but the food is great, the menu huge--both drink and food--and the waitstaff friendly). Other good places to eat are Back Bay Grill (expensive, but excellent) and Walter's Cafe. For breakfast try Brealu Cafe or Becky's Diner. My absolute favorite places to shop in Portland are Dunne Roman (you have to see it for yourself) and Carrots and Co. If you like exercising outdoors, try walking the Back Bay (anyone can give you directions). Don't forget to visit the Portland Museum of Art and the Children's Museum. In the summer, don't forget to go down to the waterfront and watch the fisherman when they come in after a long day.
You can have the best of both worlds when you drive down to the waterfront and find the Casco Bay Lines Ferry Terminal, which accomodates island residents of the Casco Bay Islands and tourist who want to enjoy a nice ferry ride to view the beautiful rugged coastline of these Maine Islands and the lobster fishing business.
It takes about three hours for the full mail-run out to Cliff Island and back., other runs are shorter. You will have the opportunity to get off the boat at Cliff island for an ice cream cone or cup of hot coffee. But beware, you might not want to get back on the boat.
This island is great. About 90 year round residents, and about 300 summer folk with seasonal cottages. They still have a one room school house. And have there own little post office.
The Longfellow garden, behind the Longfellow House on Congress Street in Portland is a quiet secluded retreat from the hustle of the city traffic. This walled garden has a nice selection of perennial plants , and is a pleasant spot for a quiet talk. See the travelogue for other spring views at the garden
Henry Knox had this home built in 1785. He died in 1806. His wife and children lived here until 1870's. Then the home closed and it ws in total disrepair. The DAR found the plans and rebuilt the home to original state in 1920. The one remaining son donated a lot of furniture, all of which is wonderful.

Q: SPORTS BARS FOR NFL GAMES "In relative close proximity to where the cruise boats dock at Portland, Maine, are there any sports bars that DEFINITELY have..."
A: "That looks like the premier early game, even a regular bar should be showing it. After looking at Portland Waterfront, I would guess you will be at Maine State Pier...."
