What to do in Portland?

by cet84

Hi, my boyfriend and I are taking a cruise and one of our stops is Portalnd. We are trying to venture out and take our own tour. We will be docked from 10am to 7pm. Considering our short time frame what sightseeing is most recommended, best place to eat, and best tour to take?

Thanks!

There are a few museums you can visit in downtown Portland: Longfellow House (http://www.mainehistory.org/house_overview.shtml), Victoria Mansion (http://www.victoriamansion.org) and Portland Museum of Art (http://www.portlandmuseum.org). Portland Headlight is also one of the regions's main attractions (http://www.portlandheadlight.com). If you're not tired of being out at sea, it's also possible to go on a sailing cruise around the bay. There are lots of seafood restaurants located on Commercial Street, DiMillo's floating restaurant (http://www.dimillos.com/restaurant/index.html) is one of the most popular. Hope this helps!

Travel Tips for Portland

Lobsters, clams, seafood

by SLLiew

One of best thing in Maine to eat the fresh seafood.

The lobster with melted butter, the thick clam chowder and fish and chips.

Naturally, I have devored many lobsters when in Maine.

Caution: Use a nut cracker to break the lobster claw, not your teeth.

a small city

It is fairly easy to find your way around Portland . The interior of the Cathedral in the foreground is lovely white marble. You can see the observatory just to the left and behind the Cathedral where you can look out to sea or at the city and surrounding landscapes

Packing List

by DesiraeAPS

In Maine, the duffle bag and backpack are a must. You will definitely look like a tourist with hard or soft-sided, standard luggage. Portland is laid back---you won't need tons of stuff. Though it is warm (and very humid) in the summer, since Portland is on the ocean, we get the ocean breezes, making a sweatshirt or cardigan sometimes necessary at night. If you travel anytime between fall and spring (mud season), bring cool and warm climate clothing--layers are key. During winter (the snow) and spring (mud season), don't wear shoes/boots that you'll mind getting wet and/or muddy. In the summer, sneakers or sandals are all you'll need. Did I mention Mud Season? The city of Portland is home to several excellent hospitals. You'll never be more than 5 or 10 minutes from one. There are also plenty of drug stores and convenient stores everywhere in case you've forgotten a necessity. Portland is a great 'walk around' city. There are some parks where a blanket and a picnic basket could come in handy. Portland is not far from an abundance of beaches and camp grounds (though you won't be able to swim or pitch a tent in Portland itself).

First settled in 1660, the town of now 6,000 people once thrived as a shipbuilding meca and commerce. They had build 5,000 ships form here over the years, and mid 1800's was the peak. Now still having some 500 people at the BAth Iron Works, they buld the Ageius destroyer for the Government.

It's only a short 45 minute drive from Portland to the fabulous little town of Freeport , a shoppers haven. Even if you're not into designer outlets and specialty shops, there is something here for everyone. Here is Banana Republic.
