Sea Ice

by iwishiwasinpakistan

Does the ocean often have ice on it in Portland, Maine in the winter? If so, does the ice ever get thick enough to walk on during a very cold spell?

In January and February ice may form especially near the piers/wharfs. The USCG and regular commercial traffic keep the harbor virtually ice free. It is never safe to walk on sea ice, it breaks apart and before you know it you are in life/death situation as the water temperatures are very cold.

Actually Portland is north america's northernmost year round ice free port. It never freezes, ever. Great little town though! Check out the restaurants on Munjoy Hill, and the Portland Observatory!

Yes, some of Maine's bays and inlets freeze during the winter. One problem, the tide rizes and falls 3-4 meters every 12 hours. This action breaks up the ice into a lot of floes which sometimes drift apart or tip over. Best advice is STAY OFF THE ICE!!!! If you want to walk on ice there are plenty of frozen lakes and ponds. They'll even let you drive your car on some of them - another foolish move since people get killed every year. Even a Honda civic weighs over a ton.

While your here in Portland, I totally recommend just walking the streets of the Old Port. You will find oodles of Dining experiences, plenty of fine Irish Pubs, tons of shopping and a good deal of quality coffee houses. The memories just keep coming, the longer I live here the more I fall in love with it. So much to do, so many places to see, and the people are just plain friendly!!!

Take a walk by the seaside and enjoy some nice ocean air. We actually came off season and didn't get to do some activities -being things were closed, and it was quite cold. Take a boat tour of the harbor. You can see all the nice boats, small islands, and on some occasions -seals as well.

sculptures are scattered here and there through out the city. This example "The Ascent " by Kennedy is a nice example. Find it at the tope of Temple Street, across from the side entrance of the Portland Public Library

Montpelier at Thomaston

by BruceDunning

The original home was built by Henry Knox, GEneral in Revolutionary War, in 1795. He died in 1806. They couple had 123 children, but only 3 lived to maturity at 20 years. Henry's wife came form the Waldo family, who owned 560,000 acres of land in the area. They were loyal to King George and went back to England at the War. They disowned the daughter. Siblings lived here until 1871. The home on the ocean side was in disrepair. Daughter of Revolution found the building plans and reconstructed to original state a new home in 1920. One son remaining left much of the family furnishings to the new home. It is elegant inside and worth a tour for $5. Times June 1st through mid October.

A Portland icon

by sswagner about Dimillos Floating Restaurant

Portland is known for its seafood, and Dimillos certainly has a lot of it. This floating restaurant has a reputation for being a bit "touristy", but I think it is a good place to eat, especially for the first time visitor to this area. There are several lobster dishes to choose from. If you like lobster, there is no better place to be than Maine. Dimillos is right on the waterfront in downtown and there is plenty of parking. For lunch, a lobster roll sandwich is always nice.
