Hi, Portland is a beautiful city to spend time in. I would suggest spending some time at Washington Park, we were just at the Rose Gardens this past Sun after a night at The Benson Hotel. There is the Pittock Mansion, Chinese Classical Gardens and the beautiful waterfront area to explore, also. The Pearl District has several fantastic restaurants. Park Kitchen, Carlyle, Bluehour, Ten 01 and Fenouil are a few of our favorites.

This past weekend we enjoyed a nice meal at Pazzo in downtown Portland, lunch at Fenouil on their outdoor patio was a real treat, if you like innovative menus, check out Le Pigeon. Our meal there this past Mon. night was very nice. I had the Beef Bourginoin which was out of this world! Our dessert was the Bread Pudding with Hucklyberry Sauce and Goat Cheese Gelato. Portland is a foodie's heaven. I hope you have fun! :)

I think the previous poster wrote about Portland OR instead of Portland ME. In Portland ME, I would recommend visiting Portland Headlight (you've surely seen it in pictures), Longfellow House (birthplace of American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow), Victoria Mansion (beautiful 19th century house and Historic National Landmark) as well as the Portland Museum of Art. There are plenty of nice restaurants to choose from in the Old Port district, especially if you like seafood. Hope you enjoy visiting Portland, it's a really charming spot!

If you have a car.... a drive to Winter Harbor or Bar Harbor would be great.
I hope you like lobster.

Travel Tips for Portland

Sculptures on Public Pier at Old Port.

by ladyanne

While waiting for the ferry at the Casco Bay Ferry Lines, on Commercial St. I got a chance to walk the area and explore the Public Pier right next to the Ferry Lines.

It was very visual and nice and cool with a breeze plowing off the water. It was a beastly hot day.....so enjoyed the relief.

The modern sculptures were interesting as they were a contrast from the Whale Wall and

This photo shows the contrast of the different mediums. Taken from the Public Pier. It was an OPTICAL ILLUSION. Portland is a small city that has it all, from the great working waterfront, Old Port, shops, restaurants, museums, wonderful New England charm and historic envirement, great old architecture, good old hotels, the Ferry Lines......and the island life just a hop, skip, and jump away.

I love everything about Portland.

Immediately shovel off the snow on garage driveway

by SLLiew

I was surprised that locals often immediately use to shovel the snow from their garage driveway. This will prevent ice building when the snow melts and freeze overnight.

Also if someone fall over your icey driveway, you can be sued. So if you are staying in a rented place with your own garage, be prepared to shovel the driveway while the snow is fresh and not hardened yet.

Portland will surprise you with its picturesque setting. Make sure you have your camera to capture the lobsters and the marina and the pleasant streets and the area lighthouses and shoreline and . . .

Portland Public Pier...Waterfront, Old Port.

by ladyanne

The Public Pier on the waterfront of Portland, Maine is easy to miss....and it is a nice place to walk and take refuge from the heat of the city even on Merchent St. that runs along the waterfront. As soon as you go out on it, you can feel the cool ocean breeze if you are lucky to catch it coming off the water, and not from the mainland.

The Pier is a place you can walk, sit, fish, ride bikes, rollerblade or skateboard. It is next to the Casco Bay Ferry Lines, so if you park in that area to do the OLD PORT, you should take a few minutes to explore the pier.

The modern sculputures are interesting, and almost don't fit there....and yet they do.

The ship building yard is not far....and the structures give the feel of iron works.

Old Orchard Beach

by BruceDunning

This is a town south of POrtland aobut 15 miles. It is a famous place for people to come during the summer for the beach activity. They also have an amusement park and other kid type things to do. The stretch along the ocean goes for at least 2 miles, and it packed. I cannot imagine myself being here in peak summer days, with the crowds and cars in line for miles.
