More about Portland Regency Hotel
Great location and service
We enjoyed our stay at the Portland Regency Hotel.
The best things about this hotel are the location and the service. The location is great, right in the heart of Portland's Old Port section of town. There are many restaurants and shops within walking distance.
The service is also outstanding. If you come into town via train or plane they will send a complimentary shuttle van to pick you up, and of course take you back to transportation when you check out. All you have to do is call a little ahead of time. The staff all seemed genuinely friendly and seemed like they all wanted you to have good time.
The only things I did not like about the hotel were the fact that since it is on a narrow street the views from the rooms left a little to be desired. You have a nice view of a parking lot or the stores across the street. Also, the vending/ice machine area was a long walk from some of the rooms. There was only one ice machine and if it isn't on your floor it could be a hike.
There is a nice cozy little bar on the ground floor (great martinis) and even though we only had breakfast in the restaurant, it seemed very nice but a little small.
All in all, not a bad place to stay in a very cool and fun town!
Superb location! Positive Experience
We stayed here for two nights over New Year's weekend. Valet parking at $10/night was very convenient, since parking can be tough in the Old Port. Check-in staff were courteous. An enormous map of the world stretching the length and breadth of the wall in the common room/study was endlessly entertaining for our 3 year old. Our room was on the 4th floor and was one of the "skylight rooms". Honestly, it was not dark, gloomy or claustrophobic (in our opinions). Sunlight shone in through the skylight. At night, four lamps in the room lit it sufficiently. The room was a fairly standard size and had two double beds. The bathroom was very, very clean and the two bathrobes were a nice addition. The towels, although plentiful, could be a bit more plush to the touch. Nightly turndown with chocolates, and hot coffee delivered to your door at your requested time in the morning. The only caveat: be sure to request a room on the other side of the building from the Atlantic Room. Our room was two floors over this function room, but sound traveled up the staircase near our room. The result: on New Year's Eve, the live Latin salsa band playing at the wedding in the Atlantic Roomn sounded as though they were playing in our closet. We could also hear entire conversations of partygoers ("I knew I shouldn't have worn this dress!") The band played until 1 am. Happily, spouse and I love salsa music so we actually enjoyed our free concert, but it could have been a very unhappy experience for someone else. All in all, I don't feel the room was really worth the $229 we paid for New Year's Eve, but certainly worth the $134 we paid for the next night. You are definitely paying for the location, which just cannot be beat. Smack in the middle of the Old Port. Another plus is the spa, which is very clean and free (sauna, steam room and jacuzzi) for guests. We both booked spa treatments, which were throughly relaxing and reasonably priced. Breakfast was included in our package and served at the hotel restaurant, 20 Milk St. Good, but nothing outstanding (except for the fresh orange juice and attentive service). Drinks at the hotel lounge, the Armory, are a nice cozy ending to the day. We will most definitely stay here again.
Location, location, location!
If you're into location, this is the place to be. Right in the heart of Old Port, you're in walking distance to most everything. This is an older, historic hotel, nicely appointed, but sadly just not capturing the atmosphere that others on the National Histroic Register do. The rooms have awkward slanted windows and the shades don't do much to keep the light out. Additionally, if you need noise (like a fan) to sleep, make sure and bring something, as there is no built in 'noise maker' here. Front desk staff and valet were polite and courteous and our room was well cleaned.
Perfect on all accounts
Our group of four best girlfriends from high school just spent a great weekend in Portland with the Portland Regency as our home base. The hotel's location is perfect--we parked our rental car and never used it again until we departed! The hotel staff is professional, fun, friendly and helpful. Other reviews have said the rooms were small--we were four in our room and felt it was just fine. The bathroom is great and updated, and the bedroom portion is historic but comfortable and clean--just great. Turndown service (w/replenishment of towels!) was very welcomed. The Spa at the Regency is top-notch. Go early to appreciate the luxury of the jacuzzi, steam room, and sauna. Do ask the hotel staff for restaurant recommendations, sites to see, etc.--they seem to enjoy giving recommendations!
Great Hotel-Perfect Location
A great location. Close to everything in town, restaurants, museums, theatre, harbor. A corporate looking interior...but clean rooms and nice bathrooms. A great health club area with spa, sauna, steamroom. Walking distance to the best restaurants (Cinque Terre, Fore Street, Duck Fat, and others). Great hotel...I'd go again.
Wonderful experience, this place does everything first class. My only complaint was that our room faced the street, and there was a lot of street noise in the middle of the night. Overall, super service, awesome staff, great restaurant (20 Milk St- do the B&B package!). Definitely a pleasurable stay!
Stayed here for 2 nights, lovely room which was spotlessly clean and a good size. Nice bathroom and effective aircon throughout. Staff were particularly friendly and efficient with a genuine air about them. Valet car parking was great as was location of the hotel, right in the harbour district and close to whatever Portland had to offer. The restaurant in the hotel is a bit pricey but the food quality and service level made it well worth it, some of the best meat dishes I have ever tasted.
Well worth trying.
A little funky, but fun
This hotel is in a renovated historical building that was an armory, so it is a little funky and quirky, but in a very charming and comfortable way. The staff were wonderful .... welcoming, friendly and seemed genuinely glad to have you there.
The location is great....only a couple of blocks to the waterfront and close walking distance to everything in Portland's compact downtown. We parked the car when we got there and never used it again until we left.
We ate in the bar one night and my friend said her hamburger was one of the best she'd had. I had a fish sandwich that was so full of fish I had to eat it with a fork. Breakfasts were delicious.
A nice touch is that you can get free coffee and a paper with your wake-up call. Unfortunately, the coffee is some of the worst I've ever had, so after the first day, we skipped that. Portland is full of coffee shops serving great coffee, so the bad coffee here was a mystery.
If I'm ever here again, I'd definitely book a room at the Regency.
No Longer a Good Place to Stay
For many years we used to love to go to this hotel for a weekend getaway. It WAS quiet and comfortable. The last 2 years, however, they seem to be focusing on the seminar and convention crowd. Needless to say it is NOT QUIET anymore. We were surrounded by VERY noisy people both times and the staff would not change our room.
Though it was obvious that we did not have a pleasant stay, and I wrote a letter to the manager, I was basically told, "Sorry about your bad luck."
We will NOT go back to the Regency!!!
