Portland Public Market - still operating?

by archer1267

We just came back from a weekend in Portland and I was disappointed that the Public Market was closed, despite signs that it would be open on Sunday. When we looked through the windows and doors, we hardly saw any signs of life in there...maybe signs of two or three vendors. I'd read that the market was an attempt to revitalize the downtown area...did it just not catch on?

Hello,
I am curious to find out about the Public Market. I will going to Maine in Oct. and that was going to be one of our stops! Hopefully someone out there can shed some light on this for us.

RE: Portland Public Market - still operating?

Hello,
I contacted the Maine Visitors Bureau and this is the email they sent me....

The Portland Public Market building was recently sold. The new owner has chosen not to operate it as a market. Many of the vendors have moved to other locations within the city. In Monument Square, there are three to five vendors in a new building (I believe that it's called Monument Market). Another vendor has move to Commercial Street - Maine's Pantry. Stone Soup still has a location on Congress Street and another is expanding it's services in the building across Preble street from the market. I hope that this answers your question.

There was a wonderful outdoor farmer's market in Portland Maine last year. I am sure it will operate this year, though I am not certain of the days. Early in the season they were rather heavy on flowers though.

Travel Tips for Portland

The streets down by the Old...

by acemj

The streets down by the Old Port district are very charming and even have a bit of a European feel. We parked down here and walked around checking out some of the buildings, the shops, some interesting artistic looking people and of course the waterfront port. It's a great area to explore on foot.

Boutiques, bookstores,...

by Pamela_Peace

Boutiques, bookstores, galleries, coffee houses, pubs and restaurants are today housed in renovated 19th century brick and granite buildings along the tree-lined streets of Old Port. This thriving retail district was once a bawdy, rough and tumble section of town. The cobblestone streets lead to the working waterfront where ferries ply the water, fishing boats unload their catch of the day, cruise ships dock and sailboats set to the wind.

West End cemetary

by dracko

If you're in the mood for a peaceful stroll, stop by the West End cemetary. It's less morbid than it sounds, really. Lots of old headstones and crypts, large trees - it's really quite peaceful and relaxing. The cemetary is in West End (naturally), one of the older parts of the city.

talking doorway

by BabciaMaine

walking along Salem Street I spied this great doorway and could not resist photographing it. Suddenly a low voice sounding like the door itself speaking said, "Stop that ! ". I answered back "but it is too pretty not to photograph" So there must be other photos of this out and around somewhere

Lobsters and Chowder

by chodearm about Dry Dock

Both great and cheap. Yukijohn crossed over the New Hampshire, Maine state line with an appetite of a elephant. Maine's main choice is the chowder and Lobster so we searched high and low for a locals perspective. Once secured, we followed through and sat harborside as the fog never gave an inch. Food was excellent at a fifth the price you would pay in NYC. I like this place. I really like this place. Lobsters, just completely succulent.
