June Week Weddings
by grandmaR
Since the midshipmen are prohibited from being married while at the Academy, many of them get married immediately after graduation.
If they opt for a formal wedding in uniform and have groomsmen who are also in uniform, they can leave the chapel under an arch of swords like this couple is doing. The weddings start right after graduation, and are on a killing schedule - in and out in a very short period of time - then the next couple comes in. I have been unable to find out exactly how long each couple has for their ceremony.
I was married on the Friday following Bob's Wednesday graduation at my home church in Towson.
The other item I remember about the chapel is that John Paul Jones is buried in a crypt in the 'basement'. You can get in to the tomb even during church services through a side entrance.
He died in France at age 45. His body lay in an alcohol filled coffin in an unmarked grave in a cemetery for foreign Protestants for over a century. Then in 1905, it was 'found' and brought back to the United States in USS Brooklyn.. Seven battleships met them off the American coast and as a single column sailed into Chesapeake Bay. There the first four battleships peeled off firing 15 gun salutes while the Brooklyn sailed on to Annapolis.
In 1913 his body was finally laid to rest in a magnificent marble sarcophagus, modelled on the tomb of Napoleon. My fondest memory of the chapel is attending services. The windows in the chapel are by Tiffany. The midshipmen come to the services as a unit (attendance is not manditory), and hearing their choir sing. One of my favorite hymns is the Navy Hymn "Eternal Father Strong to Save"
The Naval Academy rules for being married at the chapel are as follows.
Weddings to be conducted in the United States Naval Academy Chapel are scheduled no more than one year in advance.
Use of the Chapel for weddings is limited to Naval Academy alumni , military staff and faculty members; active-duty military members assigned to Naval Station Annapolis and active-duty military personnel living in the immediate vicinity of the Chapel who also regularly attend Chapel services.
Arrangements for pre-marital counseling for Naval Academy alumni should be coordinated directly with the Academy chaplain assigned.
What Style of Building is That Again?
by fmaven
If you're strolling around Annapolis you'll notice that it is filled with historic homes. You might also notice that some homes have little different colored markers with trees on them. These markers are from the Historic Annapolis Foundation and the colors tell you what time period (from 1681 - 1938) the house was built.
So...a green one would be a "Greek Revival" built in 1820-1860, get it? The tree on the markers represents the Liberty Tree that once stood at St. John's College.
State Capitol Is The Landmark
by lmkluque
Annapolis is a wonderful day trip from Washington D.C. but also a destination on it's own. The City docks seem to be one of the biggest draws for a tourist and there you can see the Kunta Kinte-Alex Haley Memorial site which has changed it's look since I was there. The Middleton Tavern is just a block or so away and beyond that you'll find the streets of the old section of Annapolis. The Maryland State Capitol building, which was the capital of the USA when the Revolutionary War was ended with the signing of the Treaty of Paris. Click on the photo, the Maryland State Capitol building can be seen from most parts of the city!
There are carriage tours and walking tours for those who would like more information of what they see along the way.
Ram's Head Tavern
by Ewingjr98
We had a good but expensive dinner at Ram's Head Tavern on West Street. A hamburger is $8-10 and steaks run up in the $30 range. The locally brewed beers were good, and cost around $5 each. I had a tasty Olde Ale and a burger.
The front of the tavern is a nice bar area, with a large screen TV and several small TVs for sports viewing. The back has several large dining areas that must hold hundreds.
Dock Street Bar

The Dock Street Bar is a new restaurant/pub located in the heart of old town near the water. We had some very good crab cake sandwiches and draft beers. The service was above average and the staff very, very friendly.
