Trains from Penn Station to BWI

by MerlinII

On Wednesday, March 24, 2010 we will be traveling in the early evening from Penn Station to BWI. ARe there trains available?

Re: Trains from Penn Station to BWI

by yvr

Use MARC not Amtrak as fares are much less on MARC, $1.60 I believe. Trains depart
Baltimore/Penn at the following times:
Train 437 departs 450pm, arrives BWI 503pm
Train 439 departs 525pm, arrives BWI 541pm
Train 441 departs 625pm, arrives BWI 639pm

Travel Tips for Baltimore

coffee

by shohman

As a coffee freak, I was forced to find a shop near my hotel. Caribou Coffee is apparently a chain from MN, but I don't have any in Florida. The coffee is pretty good, but they aren't open on Sundays! Sunday is the best day for coffee, so I found that quite perplexing. http://www.cariboucoffee.com/locations/locations.asp?state=md

Monumental City

by grandmaR

Baltimore has lots of monuments. They built the first monument to George Washington back in 1829.

This statue is of John Mifflin Hood, early president of the Western Maryland Railway. Mr. Hood played an important role in shaping the Western Maryland Railroad (it became a "Railway" after 1911) into a strategic "bridge line" that linked the Port of Baltimore with western points.

During his stewardship, Western Maryland passenger trains also used the Pennsylvania Railroad line from the west, stopping at Pennsylvania Station, to reach the Western Maryland's Hillen Station in downtown.

The statue is unusual because few statues were ever commissioned to honor men of the railroad industry. Some people think it should be at Pennsylvania station instead of here. This picture was taken from the car and wildcard03 kindly confirmed the identification of it for me.

Yes, that's John Mifflin Hood, president of the WM Ry. from 1874 to 1902. The monument is located in St. Paul Place, a small park located along St. Paul Street where it is crossed by Orleans Street (on an overpass) in downtown Baltimore.

Defender's Day -- Go to Ft. McHenry

by AKtravelers

Defender's Day is a local Baltimore holiday celebrating the September 14, 1814 victory over the invading British that saved the city from certain destruction. While it's true that most Baltimoreans haven't even heard of the holiday or think it has something to do with the Ravens' linebacking corps, its worth paying attention to if you're in town during September. Check the calendar of events for the closest weekend and you'll find that there are lots of events in conjunction with the holiday at Ft. McHenry. This includes an outdoor big band concert, War of 1812 firearms demonstrations and fireworks meant to mimic the exchanges of gunfire between the fort and the British ships. It really does sound like the battle and, at the end, a garrisson of re-enactors shouts huzzahs from the ramparts with a big American flag waving amidst the smoke behind them.
By the way, the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Baltimore is coming up and the US Park Service is already planning for the celebration!

Baltimore Blues

Laura Lippman, a writer for the local Baltimore Sun Newpaper, has also written a wonderful series of mystery books based in Baltimore.

Cal Ripken - Baseball's "Ironman"

by Ewingjr98

If it weren't for sports, Baltimore wouldn't have much. Luckily, Baltimore sport fans have many heroes, and those are well-deserved. One of the greatest is Cal Ripken, the "Ironman" of baseball. He broke Lou Gehrig's record of 2,130 consecutive games played, then went on to stretch the record to 2,632 straight games before he was finally pulled from a game. Besides his string of consecutive games played, Cal Ripken also is one of the best shortstops to ever play the game, with 19 All Star appearances and over 3,000 career hits.

Ripken was born in nearby Aberdeen , Maryland.
