Travel Tips for Frederick

Monocacy Battlefield - Thomas Farm

by Ewingjr98

The brick house at Thomas Farm was constructed around 1780 by James Marshall, a Scottish Merchant. In 1860, just prior to the start of the Civil War, Christian Keefer Thomas bought the property to escape the problems in the city of Baltimore. Prior to the Battle of Gettysburg, Union General Winfield Scott Hancock spent three days here on his way to the battle.

During the Battle of Monocacy, the Thomas Farm was the center of some of the day's most intense combat. Thoughout the day it was the target of Confederate canon, and it changed hands more than once. Later that year General Grant held a council of war at the Thomas Farm house.

The Thomas Farm was the last major peice of land in the Monocacy Battlefield to be acquired by the National Park Service in 2001.

FREDERICK, MARYLAND - HOME OF GREAT MURALS

by Rich62

"MURALS"

THERE SEEMS TO BE A LOT OF ARTISTS around Frederick who specialize in murals. This one is in the downtown area. Another VT contributor recommends seeing the "painted bridge" which has some really spectacular ones.

"CHOCOLATES ON MARKET STREET"

AT THE LEFT EDGE OF THIS PHOTO is an outstanding chocolate shop which charges reasonable prices. Usually things are more expensive in the Middle Atlantic States than at our home in Nebraska, but not in the case of these chocolates. Name of store: The Candy Kitchen

I am told that Market Street and Patrick Street are the main thoroughfares of commerce in this interesting town.

"HOOD COLLEGE"

A SMALL LIBERAL ARTS SCHOOL in Frederick. My cousin graduated here with an art degree.
