Greenbelt: Breaking New Ground
"In the Spirit of the New Deal"
President Roosevelt's New Deal programs included a lot of new public works, improvements to parks, and the creation of new planned communities. One of these was Greenbelt, Maryland.
Founded in 1937, Greenbelt was surrounded by woodland, hence the name. It's built around Roosevelt Center, an open-air business and shopping district. It has miles of hiking/biking trails, a large artificial lake, and a lot of trees. This community has served as a model for others like it (e.g. Columbia, Maryland).
