Road Trip To-Dos

by Nationsbound

I will be taking a road trip from TN to Maine this July and would like some ideas of affordable, excitng, spontaneous things to do. States will include W.V., Vermont, Maine, N.Y. Mass, Pennstlvania, R.I., Conn., N.H., Maryland and N.J.

If anyone has creative things to do, restraurants, events during July in these places, etc, PLEASE let me know.

Thanx!

Depending on where you'll be around the 4th of July, there is the Bristol Parade in RI, or, in NH, there are FANTASTIC fireworks display in front of the Mount Washington Hotel. People get there early (and I mean early - bring something to eat and drink) and park on the road in front of the hotel and party and wait. You won't be disappointed. Also, in RI, the Newport mansions are a must. In MA, you have the great city of Boston. In NH, there are many, many things to see and do. You may want to contact the Chamber of Commerce for each state for more info. If you want to see moose, travel north on Rte. 3 to Pittsburgh, NH (the CT Lakes Region) to what's known as Moose Alley. Between 5 & 8 you're bound to see moose, and be careful, especially traveling back, as they just walk out in front of you and they are HUGE - 1,500 - 2,000lbs! They mostly come out around dusk and after dark and don't care about traffic and take their sweet time crossing the road. Up moose alley, you can get quite close for pictures, and they won't move. Hope all this is helpful. Have fun and enjoy your visit to our part of the country.

check out www.chowhound.com, and the various message boards to find good eats all alonge the way!

I don't know what exactly qualifies as "affordable, exciting, and spontaneous," so if you could elaborate on what exactly you're looking for: US kitsch, national parks, festivals, etc....that could help!

A few ideas:

West Virginia - go white water rafting on the Gauley, New, Cheat or Youghigheny Rivers.

Pennsylvania - visit Pittsburgh, one of the most underrated cities in the USA. Philadelphia also has a ton of things to see. Other off-the-beaten-path suggestions include the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania, the Steamtown train museum, Roadside America (a big indoor model train layout), Hershey, a coal mine tour, the town of Jim Thorpe

New York - New York City, the baseball hall of fame in Cooperstown, the Adirondack mountains, Lake George, Saratoga, Fort Ticonderoga, etc.

Connecticut - Mystic seaport, Foxwoods or Mohegan casinos

Maryland - Army Ordinance Museum (north of Baltimore), Annapolis
