calling all Metro riders...

by dwhite6952

I'm flying into DCA on Monday night...if i'm on time from Chicago, i get in at 10:20ish...

I've got to catch the METRO to Silver Sring and will have a window from 11:30 to midnight(after getting luggage) to catch my two trains...will i make it from Terminal A to the METRO station at DCA with no issues, and do the trains run on pretty good time?

So nervous doing it on my own, but at least it should be really quiet, right?

THanks for all your help...if i miss the train, i'm looking at $30+ cab ride, give or take?

thanks all!!!

RE: calling all Metro riders...

well, I usually fly into BWI, not DCA, but I took Metro once or twice from the airport to silver spring or glenmont, which is past SS. I don't remember what terminal I came into, but it didn't take too long to wait for the shuttle to Metro and to get there. SO - instinct tells me you'll probably make it, although not by a whole lot. That time of night, I suspect the trains will only be running every 8 or so minutes to Silver Spring, but yes, they are pretty reliable, and at that time of night, things should be moving fairly quickly. I'm not sure if Metro shuts down right at 12 - but at each station, they usually post "the last train leaves at whatever time", which helps. Often I think it's a little after 12 or whatever the quitting time is. If you don't make it, you could probably try Super Shuttle (I believe they leave from DCA as well as BWI and Dulles, but they're not cheap, and sometimes they're frustrating as they take other people in the same shuttle and it can take a while. If you can't do metro, I'd probably just go for a cab. Sorry I can't be mroe specific, or more helpful, but I hope this helps a TINY bit.-Ruth in Silver Spring

Thanks, Ruth...i've pretty much sussed out the routes/times...there are 3 trains i can catch between 11:30 and to red lines.

Thankfully i'm not a petite flower and travelling with my gear, computer backpack and rolling duffle, shouldn't be too much of a hassle...friends are picking me up at the Station in SS> so that would be good. Yeah, the cab is my alternative, $$, if anything fails.

time away from home...time to grieve for my pet we just put down...and a conference to keep me busy in MD/DC...should work out well.

Travel Tips for Silver Spring

The museums and the new Civic...

by Jayden

The museums and the new Civic ctr. China Town, which are in D.C.. Also the malls in and around S.S.. The White houseand all those tourist things. Oh, a restaurant called Fuddruckers, and a night-time treat for adults, Dave and Busters arcade. Lots of fun! Deer crossing the streets, or holding up traffic at times. the concerts in downtown S.S., my friends and family. The Beltway!!

Packing List

by Jayden

There is alot to see, so I would suggest sneakers or flat shoes. In the summer it gets really hot, 90's and above and extemely humid, so shorts are a must. Winters are mild to me. You can wear a jacket up till early Nov. your normal stuff. Can Most beaches close at 9-10p. No alcohol. Summer night are warm, but not as humid. Pretty nice. Always have a camera, there is so much to see in MD.and DC.

Silver Spring is located around north of Washington, DC. From my house, it takes somewhere around 25 (give or take 5) minutes to reach the border. There are plenty of malls to choose from, as well as great food and entertainment all over.

Silver Spring is a town North of DC... home of the Discovery Channel! Parts of town were a bit rough (thanks to my getting lost while trying to find the hotel) but other areas were quite nice and tranquil.
