Travel Tips for Amherst

Don't pronounce the "H"

by travelfrosch

Locals are very touchy on this subject. They insist that the "H" in their town's name should not be pronounced. It's actually a good way to tell the eastern Massachusetts folks from residents of western Massachusetts. Those in the east pronounce the town's name "am-hearst," while western residents proudly pronounce it "amrrst." Locals claim it's the way one tells the difference between Amherst, Massachusetts and Amherst, New Hampshire (the latter is indeed pronounced "am-hearst").

Paradoxically, the former town of Greenwich, Massachusetts (now underneath the Quabbin Reservoir) was/is pronounced "green-witch."

Amherst and the Five College Area

by sarahandgareth

We took advantage the the Memorial Day long weekend by taking a much anticipated road-trip to Western MA. We have been talking about a trip to the Five College area for quite a while now and were very pleased with what we found.

All our tips for this trip can be found at our Northampton page. Please check it out.

Amherst: Home to the Five Colleges

by carupia

"A sutdent's town"

Amherst might be considered the capital of education and culture of the Pioneer Valley in Central Massachussetts. This lively town houses the biggest public University in the state, the University of Massachusetts, or simply UMass as students usually call it. Famous for its quality educational options, Amherst is also the place where Amherst College, regarded as the premier liberal arts college in the nation, is located. As a university town, it hosts plenty of bars and retaurants with a multicultural environment.

The Socrates Show!

by travelfrosch

""It's all about ME!!!""

Socrates, not satisfied with his prominent feature in my home page album, has insisted more photos of him be posted. Since he threatened to retain Scott Boras as his agent, we decided the better part of valor was to accommodate him.

"String Temptation"

Socrates is an Evil Genius, as we all know, but he's still a cat. As such, he's subject to typical cat distractions...

"Pressure Mounting"

Socrates tries to remain aloof at first, but it takes a lot of effort.

Alas, the temptation proves too much. Socrates moves in for the kill.

"Deep thoughts"

Purged of his string demons, Socrates contemplates the existentialism of shoes.

"In Search of Supper"

Socrates always has food on his mind. If there's the slightest commotion in the kitchen, he is there instantly to investigate. After all, it might involve food.

"Hello Kitty"

Not to be completely upstaged, Cassie makes an appearance, showing off her classic "Hello Kitty" pose.

"Thank You, and Good Night"

Well, that's it. Even a big star like Socrates needs his privacy occasionally. Thank you for visiting.
