fall in Boston - what dates?

by clareabee

Hi guys,

We are looking to come on Honeymoon next october (likely to be 18th OCtober)planning on doing Boston then New York - I know that the fall comes at different dates to different areas so my question is will Boston be in the 'fall' season with all the wonderful colours when we are planning to come?

Thanks

This site... www.yankeefoliage.com/peak-foliage-forecast-map/ - indicates that will be a good time for fall foliage.

Clare,
the time you plan on visiting is generally a very good time for foilage in the New England area. Weather conditions can throw things off by a couple of weeks but you can always travel a little north or south to hit the peaks. A trip up to Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire is a great option(about 1-1/2 hour drive). If you plan on travelling by car to New York you may want to travel west on the Mass Turnpike(Interstate 90) which will bring you through some nice areas. Hope you enjoy the area when you get here. If you have any other questions feel free to ask.

hello!

Thank you that is good news - fingers crossed for when we visit next year!

We will not be driving so would have to rely on public transport.

Thanks

Clare,
if interested you can take a bus tour to see some of scenic foilage areas. You can google search or speak to someone at the hotel you will be staying at. Some of the bus tour companies will actually pick you up at select hotels.
If you need to take public transport to New York from Boston the least expensive way is bus but you would probably be more relaxed and enjoy the scenery if you take the train(Amtrak). About a 4 ride(3-1/2 if you take the Acela-high speed) by train that runs throught Rhode Island,Connecticut and into New York.

thanks for that tip - yes a bus tour sounds like a good option!

Travel Tips for Boston

Take a walk along the waterfront

by Gypsystravels

Walking, its one of my favorite ways of getting around a city. I enjoy walking and finding new places to explore whether on or off the beaten path.

I have found that some of my best memories are those where I was just walking, stopping along my way with no set agenda and with plenty of time to do anything. I have found some great small shops, cafes, bars and pubs this way.

Old South Meeting House

by seagoingJLW

On December 16, 1773 , 5,000 angry colonists met here to protest the tax on tea. this meeting resulted in the Boston Tea Party which started the American Revolution.

The Old South Meeting House was built in 1729 as a Puritan house of worship. It was here that Samuel Adams gave the signal to proceed with the Boston Tea Party. (see above.) The Old South Meeting House is located at 310 Washington Street.

Walk the Freedom Trail.

by american_tourister

Walk the Freedom Trail. This is a stripe painted on the side walks that leads from Boston Commons to Bunker Hill. It passes by Paul Revere's house, the Old North Church, the site of the Boston Tea Party, etc. It is a long, long walk. Wear comfortable shoes. Having a conversation with the 'Sons of Italy.' I walked past on the Freedom Trail into the North End. Here were two guys standing outside who looked like extras from Goodfellas or the Godfather. I told them that I wished we had the Sons of Italy in Long Beach. They asked 'Whadda ya got?' I said we had the 'Sons of Cambodia, Sons of Vietnam, and the Iowa Picnic.' They laughed and told me that if we invited them they would come and clean out everyone to make it safe for Italians.

Public Garden & Swan Boats - Delightful

by Mikebb

After walking through the Boston Common we crossed Charles Street and entered the Public Garden and Lake. It was late May, spring time and the gardens were full of brilliant colour it was a pleasure to just walk and enjoy the lush surroundings.

There was a bridge over the lake which attracted the crowd for that magic photo, the water, boats, colourful gardens and trees made a great backdrop. To top this off there were several statutes and brassworks throughout the park which grabbed our attention, particularly the line of ducks.

Start at the Boston Common where there is an information booth.

These 44 acres of land are America's oldest public park. It was once used as a pasture for grazing cattle owned by Boston residents. Later it was a "trayning" field for the militia.

During the occupation of Boston it was used as a British Army Camp.
