Hotel Commonwealth - We would stay again!
We have just returned from 10 days in Boston staying at the Hotel Commonwealth - a hotel chosen primarily on the popularity index of Trip Advisor.
Without any doubt, the hotel lived up to its reputation and we would have no hesitation of staying here again and recommending it to others.
The trip was a holiday for my wife and I and our ten month old child, Charlie. Being Charlie's first vacation (and first trans-Atlantic flight) we wanted a hotel that would be flexible. Initially we were concerned that the Hotel Commonwealth might be too business orientated however this proved not to be the case.
The staff were a delight - friendly and very customer service orientated and not hovering and hankering after tips as we have found elsewhere - obviously we tipped as appropriate however we would now be bankrupt had we rewarded every gesture of assistance we received.
Front desk was excellent with special thanks to Robert and Michelle in assisting us locate a replacement sterilising unit for Charlie's feeding bottles following damage to ours in transit. Whilst an electric model could not be easily obtained, a unit for use in a microwave was. Thanks to Stacy who then supplied us with a kettle and microwave in our room for the duration of our stay.
Our room (Commonwealth variety) was spacious and very clean. We had a view over the Square to the front of the building where some building work is progressing - not particularly attractive at the moment however an artist's impression picture at Front Desk gives an indication that things will become much more pleasing on the eye in due course. The rear facing rooms overlook an Interstate highway and the baseball ground and have a far less appealing outlook.
Whilst we didn't use room service, there is a nightly turndown when artisan water and cookies are delivered which is a nice touch.
If the cookies don't kill the hunger cravings try the Eastern Standard Restaurant which is not a part of the hotel but is within its buildings. The food is excellent and again the service we experienced was superb. Raw bar, steaks and other specialities are to be recommended in a buzzing atmosphere that is not to be expected in a restaurant only open for a week!
Exiting the hotel, Newbury Street is only a five minute walk away and provides numerous shops and restaurants. The walk into Boston to the Common for instance is twenty minutes duration making a pleasant stroll - but this could be an issue for people wanting to be in the thick of it. That said, if you want a hotel that is reasonably priced and delivers exceptional quality the cost of a cab is well worth while.
