Travel Tips for Cambridge

Massachusetts Institute of Technology

by zChris

See the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), which is Cambridge's 'other' major university, catering mainly to technical students. The campus and area around it is quite staid and boring compared to Harvard's vibrancy, but Kendall Square is waking up with a new movie theatre and some great new architecture by Frank Gehry. The Great Dome is the most photographed landmark here. The photo shows many of the university's associated buildings seen from Boston.

BOOKSTORES: (Or perhaps, as I watch them vanish, I should say that they were my favorite thing about Cambridge.

(1 JFK Street, Cambridge, MA 02138 Tel. 617-498- 0062)
Extensive selection of children's books and toys.

(1256 Mass. Ave., Cambridge. Tel 617-661-1515)
Great selection of books, good history section,
especially good African history section. There is a
basement where used books are sold. The selection in the used section is
also very good.

76A Mt. Auburn St., Cambridge. Tel. 617-547-8855
Books in many different languages and a huge
selection of English/Foreign Language
dictionaries (English/Arabic, for example).

(6 Plympton Street Cambridge 02138 Tel.(617)547-4648)
Poetry Bookstore founded in 1927. A Classic.

THE HARVARD COOP (Harvard Square)
1400 Mass. Ave. Cambridge 02138 Tel. (617)499-2000
Very large bookstore with both children's and adult books. There is a cafe inside, too.

Out of Business, now. This is an example of why people should not give their custom to the huge and lifeless chains which now dominate the square.

WORDSWORTH (Harvard Square)
Another Cambridge landmark out of business. I can still picture this lovely bookstore in my mind. I've lived near Harvard Square since the early 80's and finally I believe that with the loss of the bookstores, the heart has gone out of it.

Don't go around wearing New York Yankees gear. We don't like it. (Go Sox!) For those of you who are not baseball fans and have no idea what I am talking about...The Boston Red Sox is the local Baseball team. We have had an intense rivalry with the New York Yankees for many years. Sadly, the Yankees come out ahead far more than we do. We have not won the World Series (baseball championship) since 1918. We love our team anyway.

(UPDATE 2004) The Red Sox Won the World Series!!!

Red Sox baseball game at Fenway Park

by Cabana_Boy

Red Sox baseball game at historic Fenway Park. Fenway is one of the few old baseball parks left in America and has not changed much since it opened in 1912. With such an incredible history, a game at Fenway takes one back to early days of baseball and great players like Ted Williams, Cy Young and Babe Ruth.

In 1947, the legendary “Green Monster” was created when the all the advertisements on the left field wall was painted over with green paint. The official Red Sox website has a great narrative on the history of Fenway. Over the past few years there has been a lot of talk around Boston about replacing Fenway Park with a new ballpark as so many other cities have done. So, Fenway’s time may be limited as well as your chance to experience this truly great old ballpark.

If possible, try to catch a Red Sox - Yankees game. The heckling the Boston crowd gives their New York counterparts is an experience in and of itself and one that demonstrates just how old the rivalry is between the Boston and New York baseball clubs. Bring your liver and some cash for beers and italian sauages.

This is a picture of the Harvard Lampoon building.

There's a Pinto stationwagon parked in front. Those were the cars that caught on fire when rear-ended. You don't see many of them on the roads these days.
