Parking Matters

by Daisylove

I like to just take a short tour on my own at the harvard yard on 6 Sept (sunday). May i know if there are any hourly carpark? And about how much do they charge? Thank you. :)

Parking around Harvard is quite limited, but there are a few hourly parking garages in the area. Here's a list of said parking garages with their posted on-line rates:

1.) Harvard Square Parking Garage, 617.491.0298, 1 Bennett Street, Cambridge

2.) Church Street Parking Lot, 617.723.1488, 41 Church Street, Cambridge

3.) Holyoke Center Parking Garage, 617.723.1488, just off Harvard Square between Massachusetts Ave and Mt. Auburn St. Enter on Holyoke St.

4.) University Place Garage, 617.491.0801, 124 Mt. Auburn Street, Cambridge

You're quite welcome! Enjoy Your Trip to the US & the Harvard campus!

Metered parking is free on Sundays in Cambridge and the restricted parking in the neighborhoods is generally not so. However, yeah, it's very tight in that area, particularly during the school year.
It may be best to park in a different area and then take a bus in and back. $3 round-trip.

Re: Parking Matters

Could you share where I could get a free meter parking that is near the campus? I believe I could find a lot as I intent to be there very early Sunday morning (say 8am). :)Thanks

You can try going down Brattle Street. Or along Cambridge Common. Be sure you check all the signs, even on Sunday.

Most of the streets around Harvard Squ are metered and like the earlier posts stated you don't have to put money in the meters on Sunday...and you can stay all day if you want to - no time limit. If you are going to be there that early on Sunday you shouldn't have a problem finding parking. Mass Ave (Massachusetts Ave) is all metered parking as well.

Good luck!

As a side note: I've never parked in any of the paid lots around Harvard Squ and I go there every 2 wks or so. I've always circled around and found a spot.

Have fun in Harvard Square! Eat at Border Cafe (Mexican) - great food and cheap!

Travel Tips for Cambridge

See the view of Boston from...

by RhondaRuth

See the view of Boston from across the river. Here's a view of Boston from MIT in Winter (no snow this winter)-- I'll always be adding and changing this page. Can't help it ... I'm here everyday and there is always something new to learn, see and to take a picture of. Story of my life!! Finding the best job I've ever had! I've had some good jobs and met some very nice people and made great friends on other jobs ... but this is by far the best.

Harvard Square buskers

by Carmanah

One of my favourite things in Cambridge was simply watching the buskers outside of the Out of Town News stand at Harvard Square. This little (err, big) news stand is a popular landmark right outside of the Harvard Square 'T' station in the heart of Cambridge. This is where you'll find your talented buskers singing their hearts out and selling CD's. It's where you'll see students, punks, artists, musicians and tourists mingling about. Across the street is Harvard University, and it's here where I truly felt the vibrant spirit of community.

Porter Square...

by Cabana_Boy

Located at the intersection of Massachusetts and Somerville Avenues, Porter Square seems to be that no-man's land between Somerville and Cambridge...where the brains meet the muscle....the upper class rubs elbows with the working class...naturally there's a Dunken Donuts located in the Square to ease the tension...

Porter Square lacks the shopping mall feel of Corporate America that has overrun Harvard Square, so, everything that's in Porter Square is all the more practical...so, roll up your sleeves and pull up a bar stool at Christopher's and order a round or two...

Packing List

by RhondaRuth

Nice to travel light. I see a lot of backpacks! But they look pretty heavy with books, LOL. Pack for the season ... we have Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall. And sometimes they blend together! You can buy anything you need here or course! Need a nice place to sit and eat a take out Lunch?
Try the lawn ... if you can find some between all the construction and tall buildings going up.

Mount Auburn Cemetery

by mayafly

Mount Auburn Cemetery is a beautiful cemetery/park in Cambridge near the Fresh Pond Reservoir. It's about a 25-minute walk from Harvard Square down Brattle Street, which is lined with beautiful old (and enormous!) colonial houses, including the house where poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow lived in the 19th century (#105 Brattle). Alternatively, you can take buses #71, #72, or #73.

The cemetery is green and peaceful, the perfect place for a nice walk or a picnic. It's beautiful in all seasons, entrance is free, and it's also a great record of Boston history.
