Get out along the Charles River. The Charles divides Cambridge and Boston and is lined for its entire length with scenic parkland offering a view of the Cambridge and Boston skylines. Crew practice is often held along the river, and there are some very majestic boathouses gracing its shores. Even the bridges along the Charles are scenic- here we see the Weeks Bridge with the Harvard Tower in the background.
I really loved exploring all the shops and restaurants along Harvard Square. Harvard Square consists of the few blocks across the street from Harvard campus. What's nice about it is that everything's accessible by walking, so you can just casually meander around without a real plan, for there will always be things to see.
What I also really liked about this part of Cambridge was the colonial architecture. I felt like I was somewhere else! Coming from the west coast where you just don't see this type of architecture because everything's too new, I'd often associate this style of architecture with England, or Europe. But here it was, and it was everywhere in Cambridge! It gave me a completely new experience in North America, and a real genuine appreciation for Massachusetts in general.
Even in summer, expect to get see rain showers. Coming from sunny Southern California, I was surprised to find a place were it's normaal for it to rain in the summers.
So pring an umbrella or a rain jacket. Ususally the rain lasts for only 10 or 15 minutes but it may rain several times during the day. If you do forget to bring something, you can probably find it at the Harvard Coop (Co-operative). And if you join the Coop, you'll get a rebate at the end of the year. Things maybe different since 1981.
Fresh Pond is Cambridge's fresh water reservoir. You can't swim here, but you can certainly picnic, and walk around the pond. There's a recreation area for kids, and even a golf course here.
Try parking on Huron Avenue, near the Belmont Cemetery.
Oona's sells vintage clothing, hats, jewelry and accessoriesfor both men and women. It is an interesting store, worth visiting even if you don't plan to buy anything. Some of the clothes are quite lovely, but you can also find very low-priced items, especially on the outside racks. This store has been here forever and has become one of our beloved Cambridge institutions.
