Cottage rental or Family hotel advice.
by Mayo_family
We are a family of 2 adults and 2 girls (9 + 11) visiting Cape Cod in early April this year. Our premilinary itenerary is Boston 3 nights, Cape Cod 5 nights, Hartford 2 nights and New Tork 4 nights.
We would ideally like to rent a 2 bed house / cottage for approx 5- 7 days as part of the 14 day trip. Hyannis appears central to the area. We will have a car.
Any suggestions?.
If this not a suitable option are there hotels which would suit?.
Overall we would like to stay here there are restaurants etc and some family action.
Appreciate all answers.

Lived in New England most of my life and love Cape Cod! Here is what I wrote on one of my travel pages under member name ABL1958:
"I made reservations for a motel from an internet service I found through the Massachusetts Chamber of Commerce. I strongly suggest that you go this route as well, if you're traveling to the Cape in the months of June, July, and August. To try to find a place while you're at the Cape is difficult as vacancies are a rarity. While I was there I couldn't help but notice one 'No Vacancy' sign after another. Off peak (considered October through April) gives you cheaper rates and less traffic and a wider choice, but there are also many motels, hotels, and restaurants that close for the winter season. I think the Cape has it's charm in any season, but these are things to keep in mind.
The price range of hotels and motels is between $66 USD/day to $350 USD/day. If you're at the Cape to enjoy the Cape and spend little time at the motel or hotel, then why not go cheap? I did and we were more than satisfied."
The Yarmouth area is wonderful, by the way. We stayed there as a family a few years back and found it to be a great area to walk to shops and restaurants and yet a close drive to beaches, especially the ones on the Atlantic side which are a little prettier than the Cape side. I'll have to look through some of my other info to be more helpful.

Try this link to find out more about Yarmouth (pronounced Yar-muth) which you'll find is central to most places in Cape Cod--more so than Hyannis. Have a wonderful trip---I think I'm jealous! :)

Do you some specific reasons for wanting to stay in Hartford?? If you're visiting someone or have attending an event, I understand. Otherwise, I'm not sure spending 2 nights in Hartford would be your best choice. The drive from Cape Cod to New York City is about 4 to 5 hours depending on whereyou are staying on the Cape and where on Manhattan you're going to. If you still want to break up the drive, perhaps Newport, Rhode Island or Mystic Village, CT would give you more to see.
Just a thought.......
By the way, Hyannis is the most central. It's a decent size town for the Cape, so you'll hear arguments back and forth whether that's good or bad. I think it gives you more choices in dining, shopping, evening strolls, etc. But you're the ultimate "decider".
Travel Tips for Hyannis
Kennedy memories
by Pawtuxet
President Kennedy spent his summers on the shores of Hyannis and there are many reminders of his times here. There is a Kennedy Museum on the Main Street about mid-way through the business district. The whale in front of the museum is designed with a theme of PT-109, which of course was John Kennedy's boat in combat. The whale sports a purple heart on a ribbon around its neck...symbolizing Kennedy's award for having been injured in his heroic incident. You can also find the church the Kennedys worshipped in on the access road behind Main Street.
Hyannis.

For those who don't know much about Hyannis, its a port town in Cape Cod USA. It used to be the summer play ground for the Kennedy ckan and JFK had his summer white house here.
To celebrate this there is actually a small museum in the town dedicated to JFK, well worth a visit if you're passing through.
Hyannis is great place to stay if you just need a base to discover the cape.
