Littleton Friendly Crossways Hostel
The Friendly Crossways Hostel is basically an old farmhouse out in the middle of nowhere. But don’t let THAT turn you off! I went away for the weekend to do something different and ended up trading in one old farmhouse for another. But I digress…
This was a new experience for me. To begin with, I have only stayed at hostels in Europe so this was my first American hostel. It is also the first hostel that I have ever driven to since usually I am taking the train/bus/plane. I was impressed. My room was small, really only big enough for two twin beds, a dresser, and a chair, but it was tastefully decorated. Handmade quilts adorned the bed and extra blankets were available in the room. The bathroom was down the hall, but closer than some hostel bathrooms I have encountered. The showers were hot and the water pressure good, but one of the shower doors did not have any kind of covering. It was a glass door and right in front of the toilets so if anyone came in to use the bathroom they could see you in the shower. For such an old place, the heating was also good and the rooms had individual climate controls.
Unique Quality: The amenities were not great, but I didn’t go in expecting much either. The kitchen was of good size and well-stocked and the dining area could seat 50+. There was a common room available but there was a retreat of high school students while I was there and they took it over so I never actually got to see the room. Parking was ample and the price was VERY reasonable. ($25 per night for a private room.) My only real complaint is that there wasn’t any sort of area with local tourist information. On their website they say that they are close to many historical sites, and they are, but there were no brochures or information regarding those sites. I would have liked to have had some sort of guide. After I checked in I never saw the owners again, but I liked the fact that they weren’t in my face.
All in all, it was a very relaxing and enjoyable weekend. My room was very cozy and I would definitely return.
