Travel Tips for Needham

Harvey's Hardware

by zChris

Go to Harvey's Hardware. This small family-owned institution has been a Needham landmark for years. Wares are displayed outside, and inside narrow hallways are crammed with as much merchandise as possible. The helpful staff is also always at hand to bring you what you need. Despite the smallish look of the place, it has absolutely everything you'll need, and cnstantly puts Aubuchon hardware, its competitor down the street, to shame. Corner of Great Plain Avenue and Chestnut Street, opposite the Town Common.

See the foliage. New England is known for its great autumn colours and Needham is no exception. Especially check out the southern part of town (by the Charles River, where I live) where the area still has a rural charm- twisting, winding roads; old colonial houses, picture-perfect white fences.

Autumn

by zChris

I have to stress this again (mainly so I can put another picture in!) but fall has always been my favourite season and in Needham it is incredibly brilliant. Here's a typical Needham street at the height of the leaf-peeking season.

by zChris

See the churches. Needham has quite a bit of traditional white-steepled New England churches. The Baptist Church, just east of downtown Needham, is particularly interesting- it is the town's tallest building and its bells can be heard all over town. In the photo is the Unitarian Universalist Church, originally built as the town's first meetinghouse in 1712. The church burned and was rebuilt many times. The current edition dates to the 1830s and was moved to this site in the 1850s.

Residential Architecture

by zChris

Needham also has an abundance of beautifully restored homes from the 18th, 19th, and early 20th centuries. Wandering the streets around downtown Needham you're sure to see quite a few appealing varieties. This house on Maple Street was built in the Italianite style after the Civil War.
