the long house~Swett-Ilsley House c.1670
by Pawtuxet
As you enter town, there is another historic house on the left, managed by Historic New England. It caught my eye because we have a similar house in our little village. Newburyport is very fortunate to have an array of property owners who are sensitive to the built environment that has survived since the early years of the country. We're making some progress in my town, but it has been painfully slow.
This is the first architectural acquisition purchased by the SPNEA, now Historic New England. Built by Stephen Swett, a portion of the house was constructed on a single-room plan with chimney bay and facade. Passing through a series of owners, the house remained essentially unaltered until a second addition of single-room was added to the original block. Further extended with new central chimney, and a western addition until its final form. It houses one of the most massive fireplaces of the period containing three beehive ovens.

Newburyport

"Another scenic Massachusetts town"
After driving through a monsoon-like storm, we got to Newburyport. As soon we got into town it stopped. Maybe it was some sort of sign or maybe it was just very convenient.
This is the center of Newburyport. It's a cute, quaint, full of shops and oh so New England and it's a nice drive - even through a storm - on 1A from Beverly.
"Eerie Newburyport"
Okay, it's not really eerie. I looked at this photo and it reminded me of the bad movies I'd watch as a kid about a haunted New England town.
"I wonder what life is like in a lilac colored home"
Just like a bit of Cape May in Ye Olde New England...
Newburyport is Quaint in a Modern Sort of Way

If you want cute ice cream shops, Newburyport has them...want to buy nautical souvenirs? They're here, too. Hip coffee shops, clam chowder, thick steaks.....all here. A lovely boardwalk and pier. Local theatre, amazing homes with widows walks and views to the ocean....it's all here!

Newburyport is a great option for a day trip...you can rent water equipment, or take a boat ride, or visit the many historic sites.
