Travel Tips for Plymouth
Lots of monuments and historical places
by gosiaPL
Being such a historical place, Plymouth has lots of other monuments and important places which I haven't seen. I should have done my homework better before my trip!
The statute in this picture is probably of lesser importance. But, in case you notice it standing in Water St. almost opposite the Mayflower II and wonder about it, it is the Pilgrim Mother Statue. It was a gift from Daughters of the American Revolution in 1921 to celebrate the 300's anniversary of the First Thanksgiving.
Aboard the Mayflower II
by Pawtuxet
When visiting Plymouth, you really need to include the Mayflower as an added tour. It's ideal if you have school children...but I never tire of the stories myself. There are costumed guides aboard the ship who are very helpful. My friend's son, Azzie had lots to talk about with them...after his lessons at school. It was very helpful in making his lessons come alive. He was enraptured.
Women's Work is Never Done
by Pawtuxet
The costumed guides at the Plimoth Plantation are wonderful. They will not leave their character or deviate from their time period. They speak in an old English manner. This woman had been tending her vegetable garden and hoping for a good harvest. All of her time is spent in the basic activities of growing food, preparing food, sewing essentials and tending her family. They stressed over and over that there was no time for anything except to deal with survival.
P.S. these are her coolest summer clothes
Cranberry VINES
by Pawtuxet
Did you know that cranberries grow on vines? I didn't. They are delicate little upright vines...which grow in sandy soil...with trenches all around them in order to be able to flood the bog. The trick is to wait until it is cold enough for them to turn red...but don't wait so long that you catch a frost and lose the entire crop. OUch!
Here the berries are harvested into a flooded area, where they are "corralled" and will later be vaccumed up into a truck to take to a processor.

This is a pretty neat place to explore! You can see how the Pilgrims and Indians used to live!
