Where is the gazebo?
by kpotter
In the picture there is a gazebo overlooking the water.. could you tell me where that is? My future son in law wants to go to rockport to ask my daughter to marry him... and that looks like a beautiful place...

A gazebo is what we here would call a pavilion. It's a round(ish) structure with a round roof, and open on all sides. The perfect place for a proposal!
Wow! You know about it before the daughter?
Good luck to all involved :o)

The best Rockport gazebo I know is on the grounds of Yankee Clipper Inn. Did he pop the question yet?
Travel Tips for Rockport
Scuba divers should check out...
by diver-x
Scuba divers should check out Loblolly cove, just north of Pebble Beach on Penzance Street. There are two dives you can do here. The cove is quite large and includes a small peninsula. On the north side of the peninsula is a beach with a sandy entry. On the south side there's a rocky entry. Both are sheltered and very easy to get in & out, although, I think I'd avoid the south side at low tide as the rocks get quite slippery. Max depth on either side is around 35 feet.
If you've got a lobster license, this it the place to be. There are more lobster here than any other place I've seen. And they're BIG, too!
Unfortunately, you can't park at Loblolly (resident parking only - you WILL get towed), but you can drop your gear off and park at Pebble Beach (a 5 or 10 min. walk). Loblolly is just north of Pebble Beach. Continue past Pebble Beach until you see a dirt road straight ahead and the paved road bends to the left. Stay straight onto the dirt road until it ends.
See the Cape Ann Divers Find A Dive Site page for more information about this and other dive sites on Cape Ann.
Rockport beach - "Front Beach"
by Pawtuxet
Around 4 o'clock in the afternoon the shadows begin to creep across the road and over the sand. The last of the die hards are clinging to those late hours of warm sunshine on a mid-October day. Children run, adults daze into the horizon, and I am peaceful sitting here taking a rest from the hours of walking. We've had picnics here with the seagulls in the summer time. I'll bet that there are true beach lovers who come even in the winter. This is a well loved stretch of sand.
The beach is just around the corner from town. You are a 5 minute walk from the hustle and bustle of the town with hundreds of tourists taking the walk out to Bearskin Neck and all its hustle and bustle.
The folklore of Hannah Jumper
by Pawtuxet
It seems that many years ago the men of Rockport spent lots of time in the taverns with way too much rum. There were brawls and families disrupted....women frustrated in trying to sober their husbands. All of that stopped when Hannah Jumper decided to take matters in hand. One day she organized the women and children of the town to assemble at an appointed hour. They descended on the town with fervor....emptying every home and tavern or their rum...tossing it into the bay and vowing that the town of Rockport would be a dry town forever! That was in the 1800's and the town is still dry today. You can bring your bottle of wine into a restaurant to enjoy with your dinner....but you'll find no alcahol for sale anywhere within the town limits of Rockport. Many folks make the short drive to Gloucester for their celebrating. Rockport remains quiet and very dry indeed. We went to a town mtg. once when we were visiting. The crowds were enormous because some restaurant owners were trying to change the laws. TV cameras rolled and reesidents took their turns testifying....the booze was defeated...soundly. This is a town where everyone votes directly without a councilperson to represent them. It was quite an experience to see a truly old fashioned town meeting.
UPDATE: On my 2008 visit, I learned that the liquor laws were finally changed to allow you to have a drink with dinner. Don't want to order food? Sorry. No drink. The ghost of Hannah wants no nonsense in Rockport. :-)

Drive the back roads...get lost!
by Pawtuxet
I actually did get lost when I was looking for the cottage we've stayed in so many times. It's buried deep in the back of the main road out of Rockport. There is a rocky, bumpy, rut filled road that floods out in bad rains....and it has the most fantastic scenery you've ever encountered. I never fail to drive through when I'm in Rockport, even if I'm not staying in one of the Inns along the way. The rock here is enormous. Lots of granite. There is also a granite quarry just north of town. Investigate. Wander around. You can't miss. Get some sun.
