 I have to preface this review with this: Boston is very, very expensive. Below $200/night, your choices are limited. You will have to sacrifice either proximity to downtown (with associated transportation issues) or quality, or suck it up and pay a small fortune.

I was here for meetings on a smallish-company budget, and so chose proximity. La Quinta Inn in Somerville has easy access to downtown either driving or on the T. Without rush hour traffic, it's less than 10 minutes to downtown (with rush hour traffic, closer to half an hour). It's less than 1/2 mile to the nearest T station - busy streets for walking, but the hotel offers an hourly shuttle to the T and free parking for guests (and you have no idea how amazing free parking in Boston is). The hotel sits between 93 and a mall - not an attractive area, but it's serviceable.

"Serviceable" is probably the best word for the hotel in general. You can see from the photo that it's non-descript, but there's pretty much anything you need: coffee pot, mini fridge, decent working space in the room, free wifi, basic cable, basic serve-yourself breakfast, small gym, laundry (also an iron and board in the room). You have to go out for dinner or order in (permitted). There's a 99 right across the parking lot (decent food, good service, full bar, fun bartender), and a couple of other chain-type places nearby. If you're staying here to see Boston as a tourist, the T will get you to any of hundreds of interesting places and fantastic restaurants in very little time.

The room was fine - generic, and a bit shabby in the details, but it was clean, the bed was comfortable, and the water was hot. I couldn't figure out how to shut off the fan for the fan/AC, but it probably covered the noise from traffic (some rooms face 93 - mine didn't). The only staff I saw were at the front desk, and they were pleasant and efficient for both check in and check out. It is what it is, and serves its purpose.
