Great Harvest Bread Co.

by rqubein

Has anyone been to Great Harvest Bread Co. on S. Main St. in Ann Arbor? I hear their whole grain breads are delicious! Would love to hear any feedback you have.

I haven't been to the Great Harvest in Ann Arbor, but there are a number of them throughout the Chicago area as well. There is one in my suburb of Naperville. Check out my VT site under Naperville for some additional information and pictures. The breads are good and you get to try free samples before you buy of any bread they have baked that day. The menu of bread changes monthly, but they do have a number of breads that are on the menu all the time. Enjoy!!!

When we lived in A2 we shopped there quite a few times. My wife is a big bread lover and it was her fav. Like the last post said, it's a chain and there are lots of stores.

We live in Ann Arbor and have their bread from time to time. It's pricey, but if you are a bread lover it's worth the $.

Stroll, bike, or kayak in Gallup Park

by Bunsch

Ann Arbor did some extremely sensible planning, with the result that places like Gallup Park exist. Combining a biking/walking/rollerblading trail which intermittently reaches larger park spaces, the city has preserved 69 acres of the riverine environment. As long as there isn't a train passing (both passenger and freight rail use the tracks which are adjacent to the bike path), the loudest noises you hear may be the burbling of the river or the warning honks of Canada geese protecting their young from intrusion. It's amusing to watch the medical students roller-blading to U Hospital, their short white coats flying. Like many such trails, there are often mothers with jogging strollers. Many strategically placed benches offer a respite to the weary walker. The river itself offers kayakers a pleasant paddle, and there is a canoe livery as well as paddle boats at locations along the river.

My mother lived in the Huron Towers, which overlooks the Arboretum and the old railroad bridge across the Huron River. (My boys used to love listening to the hollow sound made by bicycle tires on that bridge. If you have children, I'll bet they'll love it, too.) Daily when I'd visit, Mom and I would walk slowly down to the fourth or fifth bench. She called it her "restorative environment" and after a bit, I could understand the peace that seeped into her life because of her exposure to Gallup Park.

'Kai-Yuan' is a Chinese...

by yumi53

'Kai-Yuan' is a Chinese restaurant in Ann Arbor, we just found this restaurant while we were driving suddenly. We saw that they also show they have Taiwanese food on their menu, so we just stopped by, and had a wonderful dinner there! I think you will like their cooking, if you never tried to eat Taiwanese food before, because I think they really cook it very well! I like it, and you will too!!

German Ann Arbor

by Yorick12 about Metzger's German Restaurant

Great food. Metzger's menu is 90% German, but there's a little bite of American food thrown in (which is nice if you're coming with picky children, that they could order a burger or something). Lots of German imported beer, including Kolsch, which I got hooked on while in Cologne and have found no where else in Ann Arbor. The place has a nice German feel, decorated with German sights/scenes and topped off the beer steins. It can get busy on the weekend, I recommend going during the week. Reasonably priced, most dishes between $10 and $15 and they have a lunch menu with cheaper prices. Only con I think of is that it's located on the far west side town and not downtown/campus area.
Open Mon-Wed 11:00-9:00
Thurs-Sat 11:00-10:00
Sun 11:00-8:00 Kasespatzle (cheese spatzen). It's noodle-like dumplings over sauerkraut, grilled onions and topped with swiss cheese. This is really an appetizers, but it's so good I often order it as a meal.

Canoe on the Huron

by Yorick12

Rent a canoe or kayak and take a ride down the Huron River. Best time of year is in the spring or early summer when the water level is high. In the late autumn the water level can get so low that your canoe can hit the bottom in places, sometimes even causing you to have to get out and push your canoe into higher water.
