Canyon Falls
""The Grand Canyon of Michigan""
"The Grand Canyon of Michigan"? I wouldn't call it that, though that's how Canyon Falls is sometimes referred to in local waterfall literature. Why do we have to interpret everything in terms of something else? It is what it is, eh? And that's enough for me.
That's my mom. She came up to the U.P. in 1999 to run in the Marquette marathon, and stayed to tour around a bit. She runs marathons for a hobby - her goal is to run a marathon in each of the fifty states, which is kind of nifty.
I'm told that the reddish coloration is natural in this stream - it has something to do with leaching from cedar, spruce and hemlock trees - tannins. But I don't know why one part of this small "falls" is yellowish while the other section is clear.
Canyon Falls is located just off US Highway 41, about 10 miles south of Baraga. It is located at a well-marked rest stop; there's about a half-mile walk from the picnic area.
