Tiger Stadium
by BrianMotown
I can't even begin to count how many times I have spent watching a ballgame at the corner of Michigan and Trumbull (the most fabled stadium in sports). I was in Detroit on April 25, 2003 and was coming in on I-96 and got in the Lodge exit lane at the end of 96 and got off at Rosa Parks instead. Well I turned onto Rosa Parks and than left on Michigan and massive Tiger Stadium sat in front of me, the memories came back to me of this great ballpark. I turned down Cochrane and edged up to Kaline Drive and to Trumbull than took a right on Michigan and came back to take a right on Cochrane this time I pulled my car over to the side of the road got out of my car and walked up to Tiger Stadium's wall and kissed the stadium. I am not embarressed to share this with anyone because if you know what that stadium means to Detroiters than I know you will understand my kissing Tiger Stadium. My fondest memory of Detroit, I have many but June 13, 2002 stands out in my mind ahead of any. The Red Wings played game 5 of the Stanley Cup finals that night and oh was Detroit pumped to the max. I started out in Saginaw that day around 4pm and made it to downtown Detroit by 5:30, I ate at Tubby's on Washington Boulevard and after that got back in my car to go over to Greektown to park my car. I got on the People Mover right there in Greektown and rode it to the Joe Louis Arena station, the excitement on the People Mover was great and we we're harrassing a few Carolina fans, well after the train pulled into Cobo the whole People Mover was chanting, "Let's Go Wings" and it pulled out of the Cobo station bound for Joe Louis Arena and after the train left the roof of Cobo and the first sight of Joe Louis Arena everyone on the People Mover roared. I got off at the station and stood on the walkway to Joe Louis Arena for awhile and than got back on the People Mover to ride back to Grand Circus Park. I watched the game with about 20,000 other people on the big screen outside Hockeytown Cafe we sat in the parking lot of Comerica Park (the Tigers wern't home that night and that might as well be a good thing because no one would of showed up). After the game Woodward was impossible to drive on in front of the Fox. Wall to Wall with people going nuts.
Hello, and welcome to Detroit!...
by Don_Wright
Hello, and welcome to Detroit! I will add more to this page over the next few months, and describe other Detroit area attractions.
But right now, I want to take the opportunity, to announce Detroit Metropolitan Airport's brand new midfield terminal, and brand new runway!
I went to the 'Raise The Roof', public open house (Sat. 2/16), and let me tell you, it is awesome! I had been reading about it the last few weeks, and I got to see it for myself! Just a quick walk through, but I was totally impressed!
Make no mistake, many aspects of this new terminal, and the improvement it and the new runway will make in airfield operations efficiency, will dramatically boost Detroit Metro to the top of the class in the USA, if not the world!
But, don't take my word for it, read what everyone is saying, the accolades from travel professionals, people in the airline business, architects, etc!
Monday 2/18,'The Detroit News' published a special report, a guide to the new airport, also with many articles describing the design, amenities and accolades! 'Detroit's New Gateway, A Guide to the New Midfield Terminal'
Wednesday, 2/20, 'The Detroit Free Press' also published an excellent guide, including their recently published study of the new terminal, in a weeklong Mon. through Fri. series of articles, from 1/28 to 2/1. And a whole lot more, with some great graphical map guides!'Midfield Terminal Guide'
Also, Detroit Metro Airport, has recently completly revamped their official website, to reflect the amazing transformation. 'The New Metro Airport, Experience The Difference!'
And, a good source of information on Metro Airport, and also related Detroit area info, and Northwest Airlines and the airline industry in general, is:'The Detroit Metro Connections, The Motor City's Air Travel Newspaper'
here is a good graphical look inside or better yet, come see it for yourself!
Eggplant Heaven at the Eastern Market
by yooperprof
Have you ever seen such lovely eggplants? (Or "aubergine" as they say in the U.K.) Well, perhaps you have, but they certainly don't look like that at the grocery stores in the U.P.! Nothing beats fresh eggplant, squash, tomatoes and onions all combined in a spicy rattatouille!
WAYNE COUNTY BUILDING
by LoriPori
Located at 600 Randolph Street, the WAYNE COUNTY BUILDING contains the Wayne County administrative offices and its courthouse. Detroit architect John Scott designed the building which stands 5 floors and makes use of copper, granite and stone materials.
Constructed from 1897 to 1902, it may be the nation's finest surviving example of Roman Barocque architecture. The tower has four figures representing Law - Commerce - Agriculture - Mechanics.
Dive Bars
by bottleofdoom
Go to some of the dive bars. I only was there for two days, so I only got to go
to The Kress Lounge on 8400 Michigan Ave. and a really cool bar inside a bowling
alley. I forget the name, but it's right next to the C-Pop Gallery on Woodward Ave. The
Kress was sooo dive, but a great juke box & lots of pabst blue ribbon (if you like that).
You will not see any college kids pretending to be cool here, just the locals. The bowling
alley bar had a really nice bartender named Jeff & he had a drink named after him called Jeff on the Beach. It was yummy. I sampled some local Motor City Brew & it was good.
