DTW Airport Process

by DarleneCMF

Hi, I will be arriving at DTW on an international flight and only have 1 hr 20 min to my connecting flight. Is this enough time to go through immigration and check-in to my next flight? In LAX, you have to claim your luggage and check it again to the connecting flight. Does DTW have the same rules? Any airport tips on how to save time would be appreciated. Btw, I have Delta flights.

1hr20 is a tight connection for inbound international flight in DTW, but I've made it in less time, so it is possible. Just walk fast and try to have all of your papers filled out in advance. Before landing, ask the flight crew if you can exit the plane quickly and that will help you get in front of the immigration lines.

All incoming international flights have to clear customs and immigration upon "first" arrival in US soil. Wherever your first airport in USA is, you must collect your bags and go through customs there. DTW is no different than LAX.

1hr 20 min is do-able...but it will be tight depending on the lines at that time.
Tips: use the restroom before you land. Try to get through security as quickly as possible. Have your docs already filled out. Etc.

If you have a USA resident card then you can use the Citizen lane and it is very quick. Depending upon the number of flights arriving at the same time, more flights arrive in the afternoon, the lines may be longer. If you have a child with you, ask the security person whether you can go towards the begining of the line and also you could tell him or her that you have a tight connection.
you have to collect your luggage and go through customs. They are not suspicious if you are coming from Europe but coming from Asia or India, they are a bit suspicious that you may have food items and they may direct you to the Agriculture line.
It can be done but it would be a rush. after you clear the customs you deposit your luggage at a designated place nearby and then clear security to go to the boarding gate.

**If you have a child with you, ask the security person whether you can go towards the begining of the line.**

Really, as a traveller, if the child is not in a stroller, I would not be "happy" with someone not waiting on line like I am or even skipping!
If everyone who had a narrow connection time or was late for a flight could move to the front of the line, I would never board.
Just my $.02.

Thanks, everyone! I think I will risk it as the next available flight would delay my arrival at Orlando by 6 hours. I also confirmed with Delta and they said it's a valid connection. I'll consider all the tips. :)

Travel Tips for Detroit

THE GATEWAY TO FREEDOM

by LoriPori

In Hart Plaza, on the waterfront, there is a wonderful sculpture by Ed Dwight THE GATEWAY TO FREEDOM. What is written on the plaque in front of the sculpture describes it very well and it reads:
"Until Emancipation, Detroit and the Detroit River Community served as the Gateway to Freedom for thousands of African American people escaping enslavement.
Detroit was one of the largest terminals
of the Underground Railroad, a network of abolitionists aiding enslaved people seeking freedom. Detroit's Underground Railroad code name was Midnight. At first
Michigan was a destination for Freedom Seekers, but
Canada became a safer sanction after Slavery was
abolished there in 1834. With passage of the Fugitive
Slave Act in 1850, many runaways left their homes in
Detroit and crossed the river to Canada to remain free.
Some returned after Emancipation in 1863.
The successful operations of Detroit's Underground
Railroad was due to the effort and cooperation of
diverse groups of people, including people of African
descent, Whites and North American Indians. This
legacy of freedom is a vital part of Detroit and its History"

The Eastern Market

by yooperprof

Yes, this is a wonderful place in the center of Detroit. My friend Al would be shocked, but I like the Eastern Market much more than the famous Pike Place Market in Seattle - it's not at all touristy here. It's open all year round, but it particularly shines in the late summer when local farmers show off their best produce.

Visit the Rennasaince Center,...

by Lisabeth

Visit the Rennasaince Center, Henry Ford Museum/Greenfield Village, The Detroit Institute of Arts, The Detroit Historical Museum. I actually live in the suburbs, and really don't miss Detroit when I'm away. The newest thing we have is the Casino's, although they seem to be popping up everywhere!

Tiger Everywhere in Detroit

by freddie18

Oh well, not the real tigers!

If you happen to be in Detroit in Michigan, you will enjoy watching and taking photos with lots of tigers in the area of Comerica. Don't miss your chance. Your kids will like the place as it is a park dominated by the Tigers.

Bring your digital camera and socialize with the tigers just before the ballgame.
