Silver Bells is one of those small town specialty shops that caters to Xmasphiles who plan all year for the week in December. It has also jumped on the bandwagon for the Red Hat Ladies groups that spring up in weird locations for their day events like casinos or outlet malls or strip clubs. We scoured the main and second floors looking for a Rooster ornament to help the Peege celebrate the current Chinese New Year.
We thought it was just a rock shop but when we walked in, it was clear it was a haven for Wiccas. Duck Lad was fascinated by the crystals and stones while I went right to the feminist bumper stickers and picked up ones that said 'Eve Was Framed!' and 'The last time we mixed religion and politics people got burned at the stake.' The Sheep Dog wandered around chanting about past lives with the Aztecs. When we left, one of the ladies said, 'We'll see you again.' Disturbing?
Perhaps- but then again- hadn't we all been there before?
A classic example of finding out how true that cliche still is: Had we been intimidated by the name Candles and Curiosities, had our manhoods been threatened, had we kept driving, we would have never found a place that proudly displays now extinct beers as antiques. (For crying out loud, after leaving Cabela's we went to an Xmas store, a Wicca outlet, and a candy store ripe with left over Valentine's candy- how bad could this place be?) It reinforced my idea of opening a series of places called The Beer Museum where old beer paraphenalia is displayed while quick foods and cold beers are served. Local breweries would be displayed and old and current beer commercials would be shown on various types of teevee sets while patrons sat in La-Z-Boy recliners.
Eighty miles southwest of my home town rests Dundee, Michigan. The River Raisin runs through it and in February of 2005 it was cresting over flood stage. The town east of the US 23 overpass is quaint. West of the US 23 overpass an exit town atmosphere is growing. Cabela's Outdoor Sportsman stores have built a state-of-the art mini-mall for hunters, fishers, and wildlife enthusiasts.
Towards the end of the summer of 2004, Kegger and I took a day trip to Monroe with Grandpa Toni. At that time the River Raisin was a trickle of what it was during the February thaw. The picture shown here was the river after it crested.
We were quite certain that these stairs normally led down to the banks of the River Raisin. On this day, however, they went to a much more sinister place.
