center of the "white food movement"
IN ESCANABA (ESKY) YOU MUST TAKE IN LUDINGTON PARK FOR AN ENJOYABLE VIEW OF THE LAKE & AREA. ALSO, FOR YOUR DINING PLEASURE, TAKE IN THE LOG CABIN JUST OUTSIDE THE CITY BETWEEN ESCANABA & THE CITY OF GLADSTONE. THEY'RE OPEN @ 5 PM FOR SEATING.
ALSO, THE STONEHOUSE @ THE MAJOR INTERSECTION OF M-35 & LUDINGTON STREET IS EXCELLENT AS WELL. LUDINGTON PARK & THE YACHT HARBOR - NOT TO MENTION THE FALL OF THE YEAR UNTIL LATE OCTOBER FOR COLOR & ATMOSPHERE.
Dating a boy from Michigan was beneficial for my wanderlust... it may not have worked out but I did get to see a lot of Michigan! :) He had taken me back quite a few times to visit friends and relatives which is always fun. He is originally from Escanaba so we headed up there (and to Stonginton) for a weekend.
Escanaba Michican is located in the UP about an hour from the Wisconsin border. It is located right on Lake Michigan and appeared to me to be a small town reminiscent of the past. I was expecting a very small town, and was surprised that it was so big. The lakefront is beautiful and most of the major roads run along the lake with great views.
Dowtown Escanaba is basically one big road lined with restaurants, shops and other businesses. This was the part that reminded me of old fashioned towns as half of the businesses were closed and/or boarded up. It appears as though Escanaba is in need of some new blood and perhaps some revamping, but it was charming just the way it was.
HI THERE FELLOW TRAVELLERS & PERHAPS, YOOPERS. YES, YOPPERS. THAT'S SOMEONE FROM THE UPPER PENINSULA OF MICHIGAN ------ IN CONTRAST TO SOMEONE FROM LOWER MICHIGAN -- WHO WE WOULD REFER TO AS A "TROLL" -- LIKE, IN DOWN UNDER.
I'M BORN & RAISED FROM ESCANABA (ESKY) & ALSO SPEND MUCH TIME IN THE HIAWATHA NATIONAL FOREST (CAMP 7 AREA) NOT FAR FROM THE STURGEON RIVER, WHERE FAMED AUTHOR HEMINWAY, OFTEN SPENT TIME IN HIS YOUTH & WROTE THEREOF.
ESCANABA IS OFTEN CALLED THE BANNA BELT, GIVEN IT'S LOCALE BETWEEN LAKES MICHIGAN & SUPERIOR. WE HAVE COOL SUMMER TEMP'S & WARM WINTER TEMP'S IN THE WINTER, IN COMPARISON TO THE REST OF THE U.P.
THIS LAND, MUCH LIKE THE GREAT LAND OF ALASKA, IS AWESOME -- ESPECIALLY FROM MID-AUGUST TO LATE NOVEMBER.
ON OCCASION THE REGION HAS ITS "MOMENTS' BUT NOTHING LIKE FURTHER NORTH IN MARQUETTE (70 MILES) WHERE THE SNOWFALL ALMOST DOUBLES IN THE WINTER, OR THE COPPER COUNTRY (HOUGHTON/HANCOCK/CALUMET) WHERE AVERAGE SNOWFALL IS 300 INCHES JUST 180 MILES TO THE NORTH. YES, I'VE SEEN SNOW BEHIND THE FORD GARGAGE IN JULY !!
