"Overview of Frankfort"

Frankfort is a quaint little waterfront town much like many of the places along the western shore of Michigan. The drive to Frankfort can be spectacular at any time of the year, but during the autumn, the leaves seem to be on fire! Sunrises over spectacular Lake Michigan can be fabulous and the sunrise on the shore side can be just as wonderful. Try a stroll on the beach, or a hike out to the lighthouse on the pier!

Franfort is a very cozy little community. I come here a lot just to walk out on the breakwalls, or take a long walk on the beach. I love to watch the waves shoot into the air as they hit the breakwall. When it is warm I will stand there and let them crash over me.

There are two break walls which jet out into Lake Michigan, each with a lighthouse at the end. One comes from the Frankfort side. The other comes from Elberta. Elberta is the village which lies south of Frankfort across Bestie Harbor. There are sand bluffs in Elberta which are popular with hangliders.

North of Frankfort is the Old Indian Trail. This is always a nice little hike through the forest which leads down to some sandy bluffs on Lake Michigan

"Point Betsie"

Frankfort is a small town in Michigan. If you were to ask people if they know where it is, many would say no, they never heard of it. But if you ask them about Point Betsie Lighthouse, many of those same people would know about it.

Point Betsie is one of the most photographed lighthouses in America and it is in Frankfort , Michigan. It is special to me because I lived there when I was a child and have heard my father's stories about it many times through the years.

On the southern end of the Manitou Passage, it sits on the shore of Lake Michigan, the largest lake of the group of lakes known as the Great Lakes that surround almost all the borders of Michigan.

The Point Betsie light was established in 1838. Twenty-two years later, the original 37 foot tower was replaced with a 100 foot tower. The original structure was seriously endangered due to erosion but was reinforced and preserved by the Lighthouse board in 1890. Its 10 sided lantern projects a lens focal plane 52 feet above the water level of the lake. It housed a Fourth Order Fresnel lens. Point Betsie was the last manned lighthouse on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan. In the spring of 1983, it was finally automated by the Coast Guard.

This picture was taken either during the spring or fall since there are no leaves on the trees, the grass is brown, and there is no ice on the lake.

"Point Betsie Restoration"

Point Betsie is currently undergoing restoration to bring this beautiful lighthouse back to it's original layout. Even though a volunteer organization is busy fixing it, you may still tour through it for a small fee. (Adults $2, children $1) The money is used for restoration since at this time there is no government funding. More information is available at pointbetsie
