Travel Tips for Grand Rapids

Visit the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum. Most people who live here have never been in this historic building, and they don't know what they are missing. My fondest memory would be attending the Whitecaps (single-A baseball team) first game, in 1994. This was the beginning of this city's growing into a major minor league sports town... Hoops basketball(CBA), Whitecaps baseball (MWL), Griffins hockey (AHL), Rampage Arnea Football (AFL) and Grand Valley State University (NCAA DIV-II) have each made national headlines for their individual successes in recent years.

There are many restaurants to choose from in and around the GR area...Rose's Restaurant on Reeds Lake is one of my faves currently.
Atmosphere can be a bit on the preppy/pretentious side and is usually VERY crowded so prepare to wait a bit on the weekends...especially in the summer. Located on the shore of a small inland lake in East Grand Rapids, this restaurant is located on what once was an amusement park/vacation location in days gone by! Before becoming a restaurant it was a small eatery where you could buy great hotdogs, rootbeer floats, etc. but was known best for its incredible caramel corn. A nice carryover from those days is that Roses' supplies each guest with a small taste of homemade caramel corn along with your check. (Check out the historical pictures in the restaurant and/or the menus for historical information). This restaurant serves a wonderful array of meals from appetizers and sandwiches to gourmet pasta dishes (all w/ loads of garlic, just a warning...they even supply MOUTHWASH in the restrooms to make up for it! Good thing to know if going on a date there..hint hint).

"Sights are Grand in Grand Rapids"

Grand Rapids seems to be bursting with things to do and see. Be sure to visit this 125 -acre attraction which features the beautiful Meijer gardens and the most comprehensive collection of outdoor sculpture in the Midwest.
Right now Calvin College is hosting the exhibition, "Experience Petra, Lost City of Stone". The exhibit reveals one of the great untold stories of archaeology: the story of the Nabataeans. whose capital city was Petra - the vital center of commerce and culture.
Save time too visit the Gerald R. Ford Museum. The list seems to be endless of things to do there.

"Sculpture of Leonardo's Horse"

This sculpture is 24 feet high. It was created from the drawings of Leonardo Da Vinci and is the most popular sculpture to see and enjoy in the Frederik Meijer Gardens.

This was the town I was born in.

by Kodi01

Grand Rapids is my home town and it is West Michigan's leading city. It was settled along the Grand River by industrious Dutch immigrants and has prospered ever since. The postcard pictures tha Grand River and skyline, Van Andel Museum Center (Amway founders), the Calder Stabile, Skyline at night and the Gerald R. Ford Museum.

Close enough for a short drive to the GREAT LAKES!

Wonderful city to grow up in....not as big as Dallas, but a good size city!
