Amway Grand Plaza Hotel: The finest in Grand Rapids
Standing alongside the Grand River in downtown Grand Rapids, the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel is truly a magnificent hotel. It was voted one of the 12 best in North America, and one of the 100 best in the world by Conde Nast Traveler in 2000. The hotel boasts Michigan's first and only AAA Five Diamond restaurant, The 1913 Room (jacket required.)
The AGPH tastefully combines old and new. The 30 story tower finished in the early 1980s, and shares the site with the historic Pantlind Hotel. The Pantlind side offers traditional architecture (listed as English Adams Architecture on the hotel's website) and includes ornate plaster work along with one of the worlds largest gold-leafed ceilings in the Pantlind lobby area. The rooms on the Pantlind side offer rich furnishings, while the tower rooms offer the best views.
This is a full-service hotel, but don't confuse it with a "destination" property commonly found at resorts. Although the area offers many activities, your choices on-site are limited to dining, shopping, lounging and fitness activities like swimming, exercise equipment, raquetball and tennis.

Amway Grand Plaza Hotel2: Amway Grand Part II
Another neat thing about the hotel is it is connected to many things in the downtown area by an elevated walkway which is accessed on the 2nd level of the hotel. On this floor in the tower section of the hotel are many paintings by locally famous artist, Paul Collins. The works are from his "America at Work" collection. My favorite, titled "The Actor", a painting of the great James Earl Jones, is shown here.

Motel 6: Grand Rapids 28th Street Motel 6
This Motel 6 advertises WiFi. WiFi is NON-EXISTENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The signal is so weak that neither my laptop nor Xoom could connect. To add insult to injury they charge $2.99/day! The staff was very polite and helpful, except for the WiFi. The room was clean. We had to ask for toilet paper and a bath towel. Clydesdale horses were tromping around on the second floor above our room. There was a John and a prostitute checking in at 5:30 AM the second morning of our stay. There was an angry fight in the parking lot also that morning. The third morning there were four very seedy looking men hanging around the entrance to the Motel. The evening of the second day there was a serious male female fight in the room next door which lasted for over an hour with the female screaming at the top of her lungs for her "keys". "After all I have done for you...." The non-smoking room reeked of smoke. We will not be staying at the Motel 6 again!

Courtyard Marriott Downtown: Well location with good on site restaurant
Decent hotel with good downtown location with a very friendly and efficient staff. Room was average but the location, price and staff make it a reasonable choice. The onsite restaurant "the bistro" was a pleasant surprise with good and reasonably priced entree's
Onsite parking with open lot parking nearby
